? for those with the 5MT and problem getting into REVERSEFit"Look inside"

My car now has 800+ miles and still breaking her in, just wondering for those that have the 5MT do you guys experience problem getting into reverse like sometimes you can't get it into REVERSE the 1st time and you have to do it the 2nd try just not with ease or so and I sometimes put it into 1st gear and then into reverse and it is all good but the thing is that when the car is in a complete stop, sometimes it would not go into reverse smoothly and sometimes it does so what are your experiences with your 09 5MT and just wondering if this is normal. I drove my TSX 6MT and never have this problem getting into reverse.

In my '07 I would have problems sometimes with reverse, as you mentioned. I think my solution was just to double-clutch, then it would go in fine. It also seemed to go in no-problem if I shifted into R before I started the car.

I would also have problems sometimes going into 3rd if I was really trying to get up to speed quickly - I was thinking maybe there was a vacuum assist that might have not gotten enough power or something.

I haven't run into any problems with my '09, but I just got it, so haven't really put it through too many paces.

my 95 civic has this issue. I just shift to neutral and left off the clutch and then re-apply the clutch.

Double clutch and put it into 1st then reverse it falls right into gear but the problem is when in complete stop and you try to put into reverse without the double cluthing an such will not do but sometimes it does so looks like it is normal and not something I would worry about. This is my 1st Honda 5mt but the 6mt in my TSX is like butter no need to double clutch all it need is just in a complete stop before going into reverse.

Had the same "problem" with our WRX wagon. Infrequently had the problem with the S2000, but you had to push the stick down to shift it back into R.

I always go from N to 1st to R. I can't go from N to R. It becomes a habit to put it in a forward gear before going to R.

its made to do that. so you dont accidently put your car in reverse when rolling forward, or while driving.

This happens on all MTs (any mfg) because reverse has no synchro gear. The synchro helps match the speed of the gear you are switching into with the MOVING transmission so you don't grind gears. You can actually shift gears without the clutch when the speeds match (push very lightly and rev slowly). Anyway, there is only one reverse gear so no need for synchro. If you shift into any fwd gear first, it will line things up and you will be able to get into R easily.

that is a safety feature in all modern cars. if you have problems putting it into reverse shift it into 2nd and then put it in reverse because 2nd gears lines up the synchroes with reverse.

I think this is mentioned in the manual somewhere and it's not a flaw. It's perfectly normal. Just put the gear in 2nd or 1st if it doesn't go into reverse. The gears need to stop.

I've never driven a stick that didn't require putting the gear in 2nd or 1st before going into reverse.

If you don't put it in a forward gear before putting it into reverse, you might be greeted with a nasty grind...

seems like some people are synchro murderers.

Yea, what he said. I was gonna basically type this so ty Fitscott for saving me the trouble lol.

Also what works too, but you have to do it very very lightly. I do this cause its just a little faster than going to a gear and back. Is when this happens, you cant get it into reverse, pull the shifter a bit harder to reverse and ever so lightly blip the clutch. If done light enough it'll spin the shaft a bit so you can get into R. If you do it too much you'll grind and look like a tool

Or just go to N and blip the clutch or go to 5th and back to R.

thank god i found this thread. i have a 2008 honda fit base model. been having reverse problems for the past 2 months.

first time i encountered the problem i tried to shift into reverse and when shifting reverse was tight to get into. didn't think to much of it. couple days later same problem. tried shifting into reverse and it was tight getting in an out of reverse. so i tried the 1st to reverse trick and nothing. car wouldn't shift into reverse at all.

so off to the honda dealership and told them the issue. they thought at first maybe it was a linkage problem. they told me that they would do a "drain and fill" and that would probably fix the problem. got my car back a few hours later. they told me that it seems to have helped the problem. they told me that if it happens again then it might be internal and they would have to tear down the tranny. they told me if they did a tear down and found it was from abuse then i would have to pay at outrageous $950 tear down fee.this was said because they noticed that i had an exhaust, skunk2 shift knob, and an intake.

bout a week later i was out with friends and my reverse cut out completely for like an hour. then came back. the very next morning went to shift into reverse and it wouldn't go at all. so i went to a different honda dealership and they told me the same outrageous story of me having to pay them money to do a tear down if they find its from abuse (because they saw the exhaust, intake and shift knob). so i left and thought of trying to shift into reverse and it went into reverse (last time the shifter saw reverse).

so i figured i would bring it back to the honda dealership where i bought the car. they told me that i would have to authorize a tear down on the tranny and if they found its something from abuse then i would have to pay the teardown fee of $957 (doesn't include any repair, just teardown). i thought they had gone mad. my FIT is a 2008 not a 1988. the service adviser told me that i had "hot rodded the car" or "speed shifted the car" or that i must have shifted from 1st to reverse or 5th to reverse. i find this to be ridiculous. what does the exhaust or the intake have to do with the transmission not going into reverse.

after leaving honda i decided to search the internet for any cases like mine. found that Edmunds InsideLine tested a 2007 Honda FIT sport with 5MT. their problem happend at the same mileage as mine.http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...534#durability

so i brought my car to a few transmission shops in the area. they had all told me that its internal and that to destroy reverse is near impossible unless u try to shift from 5th to reverse which is extremely hard due to the fact that there is a lockout on it. unless your completely stopped you cant shift from a forward gear into reverse.

also reverse in the honda fit is a sychro'ed gear according to honda.

so these have been my problems with the fit and if there is anybody out there that can help me out in anyway then pls do. i need all the help i can get so i can bring this up at honda.
