Problems with Reverse?

Anyone have trouble getting the 5 speed into reverse? Mine is sticking half way into reverse and I accidentally ground the gear thinking it was all the way in (making me cringe).
Any suggestions?

Ya it seems like reverse on the MT is a bit tricky. It wont go in smoothly all the time but reverse on alot of MT's ive driven has always been this way so it doesnt bother me much.

Yeah just release the clutch lightly and without the car in gear. Or you can allow the car to just move forward a bit with the clutch out but the stick in neutral. Happend alot on my old 240sx.

all honda gear boxes have this problem

the trick is to put the car into 4th gear first, this will line up the synchros better.. then go from 4th gear to reverse.

i have driven hondas for over 16 years and not once have i grind the gears after doing this

Yeah this happens.

I usually just tap my accelerator and rev the car a bit and it'll get it into gear

It sometimes happens on my first try to get into reverse. I just put it back to 1st and then try for Reverse again. Usually works on the second try.

I've had this problem with all MTs. I would guess it has something to do with how they set it up so that you can't throw the car into Reverse while you're going forward by accident.

on my '90 corolla i usually have to shift into neutral, let the clutch out and then depress it again to get into reverse. still takes less time than waiting for auto to engage but on the '79 corolla i used to drive this was never an issue (it was a 5spd but had rwd)

I would say this is partially true. My 1997 ITR never had this issue.
However my AE86 Corolla does and so did my FD3S RX-7 and just as mentioned; shifting to 4th with the clutch in and then going to reverse
helps.

This never happened to me in the fit, but it has on my dad's truck

i do remember in the manual, to reverse, either stay in neutral for a few seconds, or go to 1 and then R. I have learned to do the latter method for any car, which may be why i haven't encountered the grinding problem.

I stand corrected. I have driven mostly non itr tegs, civics and accords.. so I can't say if it does for ITRs

I accidentally did that. Although, I did not fully stop when going forward.

i think it depends on what gear you were in, etc.. before going into reverse..

If it doesn't go in just do the normal honda trick... Put in 2nd then 4th, then try reverse... Work everytime for me...

I always did fifth, then reverse, since they're directly across from each other.

Funny, I never thought about it before, but I do shift into another gear and then back to reverse whenever it sticks.

I don't think that works. My civic has a lockout that won't let you go directly from 5th to reverse.
