Problems with Reverse?
That little grind when you don't engage reverse is normal. I just do what everyone else does and shift into 4th and then pull it into reverse. I find this normal because Reverse gear is a spur gear, thus the gear isn't curved like the rest of the forward gears. Therefore you'll notice a whine when reversing fast.

There are no synchros on reverse (don't need it). It's actually a gear slipping in between the main shaft and counter shaft. Usually, it's just a little misaligned. Doing the neutral, clutch out and clutch in will work. Another method... try shifting it into some of the other gears just to budge it just a little for that little cog to fall into place (while still have the clutch in).
