GE8 Winter Driving and All season Tires -Pics-
So I was curious how the fit does in snow. Since I live in a highly concentrated area of snow and blizzards. We got our first large storm today. I took the fit out for a test run. Running on brand new all seasons from factory with 2500 miles on them before first snowfall.
Positives
+ It can plow through more light fluff snow then I thought it would. 6+ inches
+ The stopping distance is good as well, I was quite impressed.
+ Defrost works well on front and rear windows
+ Plowing ability is nice for all seasons
Negatives
- Rear windows fog up bad, cant get them unfogged short of wiping them
- Gets blown around easy. Blizzard blew me across the lane.
- Its hard to get up a hill with slush and snow.
- Pulling out from a stop is difficult in any situation
- Steering in snow pulls the car around easy, to where there is more slush
Overall I am impressed with the fit as a winter commute. It has the ability to be a great all around car. I have gone into snow where it touches the front bumper, and I can plow my way through it. I hold the wheel with two hands tightly so I keep a straight line, and fight any resistance the car will run into on the road.
The area to the left is shoveled, and the right is what we got in a day

Still, get yourself a set of winter tires. You'll be shocked at how much they improve your winter traction.
My mother-in-law has resisted my urge for her to get winter tires for years. She gave in this year and she's only had them two days, and already notices a traction improvement.
Try them. Really.

I know what winter tires do. I've had them on all my cars before. I tried getting winter tires for the fit in stock sizes, and they dont have any around my area. Second I am moving 3 months into winter, so I didnt want to spend that money on something I will never use again.

Just want to chime in on this. I wanted to try out the stock Bridgestone also. Same snow condition on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. 500 accidents (mostly guard rail encouter of the third kind) around the Greater Toronto Area...
Anyway. Tried the stock tires in similar conditions after 8-10 years of snow tires, wet, slush, compacted down wet snow, slightly icy and new fluffy white stuff (about the same amount as those pictures) and I'm glad to say that I don't think I need snow tires for the GTA this year. May have to change that once I hit the snowboard slopes, we'll see, hopefully the mad rush to get winter tires on will be over by then!
No problem on start up (low torque engine helps), no problem tracking, ABS fully functional on emergency braking, 'slides' straight with ABS fully on, minimal tail dancing in the turns, etc...not quite as good as snow tires, feels like somewhere between ordinary 4 seasons tires and snow tires.
Then I scratched my head, how does four seasons tires work so well, because I know from previous experience that they should have not worked as well as these. I looked at the thread pattern, and just happened that the front wheel was turned when parked...the inside strip has those snow swipes on the inner 1/4 of the width, that's more than likely why.
Will update when the temp drops to -15-20C, and in a foot of snow/ski hills.

good pics and thanks for the good info.
I miss the snow but I'm glad i don't have to
shovel it anymore or even freeze in it.
but then again driving in it was fun with my XJ Jeep.
good luck in the snow.
