Custom intake

has anyone made a custom intake yet? it looks like the intakes on the ge and the gd are fairly similar so could one take a short ram intake from a gd and put it into a ge? with slight modifications though

just go to the auto parts store and buy a couple silicon couplings and some aluminum 90 degree elbows and do a dyi for everyone to see.
its a cheap and rather effective intake.

GD and GE intakes are in no way similar. The stock GD intake gets cold air from the fender well. The stock GE intake gets cold air from the firewall. No GD CAI intakes will fit the GD. No Chamber intake for the GD will fit the GE. Most SRI intakes for the GD will not fit the GE, and any that will fit by cutting will draw only hot air from behind the radiator. That includes pieces from an auto parts store.

The GE uses a intake sensor on the air box tube that the GD does not have .. you might have a harder time than you think...

if you were closer to seattle i would help you fab and weld a really nice one.
let us all know how it goes. you might have to figure out a way to route in the intake sensor though. fortunately there is only one of them.

It's called the IAT Sensor. Different size and shape than the IAT in the GD.

i think instead of having the chamber that they should route the silver piping to the left of the battery just a little bit and put the air filter right in front of that sensor. that would be a short ram intake.

If you want to spend money on a custom made intake for your GE, look at the new one from PRM. Dyno chart shows 6+ hp gain. Guaranteed fit. You can still get in on the product-launch group buy. You won't be able to find an auto parts store kit with tight enough bends to get the filter back to the firewall. The stock intake inlet is right underneath the brake fluid reservoir, and cold air only comes in through the duct on the underside of the hood on the driver side.

There is only one intake, from Japan, made of molded plastic or carbon fiber, that makes a 180 degree turn from the throttle body and puts the filter back at the firewall. It is expensive, and ugly IMO. JDM DOHC SiR posted a photo of it some time back.

EDIT- He and Kyler posted the photo above while I was writing.
