Remember why you bought a Fit?
Remember why you bought a Fit?

All during the winter we've been posting about this or that problem with the Fit--everything from crosswinds (a real problem), to crashing into an Accord to paint chips. Here's a shot of Chicago Loop-area gas prices over the weekend. Pull up next to that SUV at a Chicago gas pump. Who's laughing now? Hah!
Cheers
Yes we all knew those gas prices were going to be going up again before summer hit so they could dig into the pockets of those hitting the roads for vacation. At least with our cars it doesn't hurt quite so bad. I filled up mine on Saturday morning and it was between empty and half. I paid $20.00 and ended up going back in for my change! This tank will last me two weeks before I go back for a refill.

Remember why you bought a Fit?
Yeah a friend of mine who is a heavy hitter financial planner told me on a snowmobile trip in March 07 that fuel prices were going to double, + the Fit was getting some great fun to drive reviews.
Guess where banks are putting their money lately?
Commodities, mostly oil futures.
and Gov't overspending almost insures inflation.
So a run up in fuel prices once again is quite possible.
I was convinced gas prices would stay above $4.00 a gallon.
Parts for my 240sx were getting hard to get and pricey. Thanks to all the local speed shops that poach the yards and monopolize.
No AC (again, I'm not spending 200 dollars for an AC compressor that SHOULD have came with my motorset)
The Honda Fit is a great hatch back. My first and second cars were both Hondas. They both lasted a very long time with both well over 200,000 miles.
Great reliability, AC, gas mileage, handling, and resale value.
Gas went back down and I'm paying off a FWD with no power and no hopes of having any.
Knowing I still have to pay off this Fit:
I did a test drive of a 2006 S2000 >> too much $!This is a bad ass race car out of the box but not much of a "car". It felt like a super go cart!
I took a Mazda RX8 for a test drive...pure sex and isn't even turbocharged.
I spent hours this weekend obsessed with the 8 researching the hell out of it on the internet along with calling up a buddy of mine who is a rotor head.
Yes, I know it is a rotary and Yes, I know how to care for them and DRIVE them. I have found good deals with used ones; the car to cost ratio is really good. Gas mileage sucks, this could be an issue.
I have always wanted a Miata. I have driven NA and NB, damn are they fun!
I want to test drive a Mazda Speed Miata.
They are hard to find but they are affordable.
I love turbochargers, they are like sex every time you get on the throttle. Gas mileage shouldn't be as bad as an RX8. A good NA or NB always has the capabilities to be turbocharged. A Miata looks more affordable overall. Any one feel me?
Coworkers are telling me to keep the Fit and save up to buy an NA Miata for a fun car.

I bought a Fit for the utility and Safety.
OK on mpg and OK on handling with AT.
And it was unique at the time but not anymore.
Gas prices are low for now but will be up again and then you'll be getting more questions about how good if your mpg.

Ive had 11 cars, most of them turbo from factory or swapped hondas that i built and made turbo lol, got tired of that bought a 2007 SI it was fun to drive and nice looking. The interior was a piece of crap and was getting "used" looking to fast. I had always loved Fits even before they were in america so I went a traded my SI in for one. The dealership was like...are you sure you want to do this???? LOL
I love my fit the most out of all the cars I've ever owned or driven. I think they look like an updated EG which was one of my favorite cars. Good handling, great looks just an over all well built car. The car is a little to slow for me but I knew what i was getting into when I bought this beast and Ive been enjoying the good mpg for a change anyway. The only thing I can say is my fit is going K soon
and then it will truly have all aspect of a fun and functional car cornered

I'm still looking into another car. The Fit is great but I'm not ready to "settle down". I am down to 3 cars that I am seriously considering:
Honda S2000: I know what I said but this car rocks. If insurance is harsh, I'm ruling this one out.
Miata: MSM preferred but will settle for a good NB. Cheaper to insure than an SI.
'06-current Civic SI coupe (FG2)<<2 door? The K20Z3 is remarkable and square! I will not settle for any other FWD.

Not that my old car (CL-S) was that bad at gas but the fit makes the CL-S look horrible at the pump. I am currently getting 33 mpg city and 40 hwy and thats on regular. The CL-S took premium. That is great in my eyes.
Yes I miss the power sometimes but the fit is also saving me more money from the cost of potential speeding tickets...
I still roll 10 over the speed limit on the hwy but now I'm getting 40 mpg instead of my avg 27 mpg in the CL-S. Shoot my tsx only gets 31 mpg hwy.
Mad props to the fit....

I know why I bought a Fit as I just bought it last week! Last summer during the gas spike I was driving a SAAB 9-5. Nice big, fast comfy cruiser. In spirited driving I'd avergae about 27-28 mpg a tank (with Premium required). As gas went up I slowed down and started trying to hypermile it. All summer I was lusting after cheapo used Metros and CRX's but it wasn't going to happen. Finally, we traded in the 9-5 on an Odyssey and that left me driving our CR-V. 23 mpg for a 120+ mile per day commute is not fun. We needed to keep another kid hauler close to home (long story) so instead of plunking down money on some used minivan I decided I'd pass off the CR-V and look at an Insight or Fit. The Fit's price and still fairly high mpg got me so here I am. I did lots of work to my SAABs and don't really want or care to do anything to the Fit. I just want something reliable and fuel efficient to get me comfortably to work and back. The Fit "fits" the bill.
I personally really miss the power of my speed3, but I do not miss the transmission problems or the cost of premium fuel.
With the current lack of aftermarket parts namely reasonalbly priced suspension bits, I am getting a bit bored of the Fit. However I guess I am settling down a bit because I relish in the fact that it only takes me approx (give or take) 22 bucks to fill up.
I do have say that at times I wish the aftermarket would catch up with the Fit (GE). I had dreams of driving a purest type car with a few mods that returned great fuel efficiency. I find myself drifting over to the 2010 VW GTI micro site and googling the 2011 Civic Si, which is basically non-existant.

You guys south of the border complain about high gas prices all the time. (j/k)
Gas prices today in Vancouver is C$1.04/liter of regular! Yes, that means C$4.16/gallon or US$3.64/gallon!
Now compare what they pay for gas in Europe.
When gas prices reached C$1.45/liter not too long ago, I decided to do my part in reducing gas consumption. Put my gas guzzling cars into storage and buy a GE8 FiT. Gas economy + Honda reliability makes the GE8 FiT a winner! Now my monthly gas bill is cut in half (at least
).
Now, you will catch me with a big
whenever I pull up besides an SUV at the gas pumps.
I talked to some poor fella who was telling me his gas bills were C$1,000 every 2 weeks! He lives in Cloverdale and commutes to Vancouver everyday.

Between my wife and I we make a VERY good living. But I find that the older I get and the more money I make, the less I find myself wanting to spend it on a car. I'd subscribed to EuropeanCar since 1994, when I got my first used BMW. I finally ditched it a year ago b/c I just began to think it was stupid to read about a bunch of $100k+ cars. Needless to say, I'm fine with trading a bit of speed and performance for reliability and fuel economy...
+1 for reliability and fuel economy.
I've have 456456745 cars in the past 5 years, and it's time to settle down. I currently have a e46 m3 and scion xb that I daily. Those should be gone next week...the replacement is a 09 fit. I haven't driven my e46 m3 in 4 months! hahahah What a waste of money lol

I bought mine to replace an '07 MX5 and an '03 Ranger Edge. One car with "decent" mpg, great utility and still perty darned fun to drive to replace two extremes and "Fit" into my tiny apartment garage. ZERO regrets.
I must say its kinda nice to see people think the same way I do about the practicality and overall smart buy the fit is. With the economy the way it is 80% of Americans should not be driving what they are (Hummers, V8 Lincolns, SUV's...etc.)
I must agree the most with bkrell. My wife and I make a good living and could easily afford more expensive cars but like I said with the economy and gas prices inevitably going up I couldn't argue with what the fit offers.
I miss power but everytime I drive the fit and see that 40mpg I get a nice sense of achievement...lol.
