Tip for spring/strut/coilover installs

This has never happened to me or anyone I know of during a suspension install. When we removed the front struts, we lowered the hubs. It didn't look abnormal - the hubs weren't crazy low, it looked like how all the others cars look when we do installs. When we tried to put the struts back in, the hub wouldn't pivot forward to line up with the strut. WTH?!? Guess freaking what? The axel's bearings popped out of the cup near the diff. Pain in the freaking ass. We had to remove the axel completely, take off the cv boot, put the bearings back in the cup (which by the way if this happens to you, the bearing need to be pushed all the way out in order for it to line up correctly), then seal it all back up. BTW this happened on both sides.

Save yourself some trouble. Don't let the hubs hang too low, support it with a jack or something at a good height.

i thought the axle pops out all the time when you don't support the hub? i always just support it though, so i wouldn't really know.

This has happened to tons of people. I used bungee cords to hold it up.

I was hoping we could just push it in, but we couldn't. Had to take off the damn CV boot. Oh well.

Support your hubs!

No homo! hahahah

I had this happen before on my GD1 & on my GE8 they were more of a pain in the A$$ on the GE8 dueto the fact that each round bearing is slightly differnt in size and they are really a pain to get back in.. I have the frick'n service manual and it was still a PITA!! But thankfully I did not have to open the boot up to get it back in.... Just a bunch of colorful words were usedbto get it back in

To me it seemed that keeping the top of the spindle leaned into the car. was just as important as dropping the spindle down too far.
I used an extra jack to lower the strut just enough and kept the top of the spindle bungied in. Zero issues, but the tanks goes to the numerous posters here on FF for the warning.
