42mpg

sorry had to post.

I've logged every tank of gas so far (minus one I forgot the mileage), I've got 2.5k on the clock so far and 7 tanks (all full fills). I am not a pokey or slow driver, but I am observant and calculating to conditions and scenarios.

the tank fill today, I drove 403 miles and took 9.601 gal to fill. so thats 42mpg my friend! My lowest tank (first) was 36 and its just been stepping up since. About 30% of my driving is poking around town and the rest is usually spent in gnarly chicago traffic (and when its not gnarly, I am at 80 or 90... there is no in between). The car calculates me being at 42.1mpg lifetime (I know it registers high) so my pump calculations are not a mistake.

The car is an 09, absolute base model, manual, totally stock. The tires IIRC are kept at 38# all around.

Look out for some posts this week as I will be drivng a 1000 miles through country roads for work. I plan on leaving a bit early and taking my time. I'm really expecting to hit at least 47, but I'll state it now, I'm not doing or going to do any thing extra ordinary to achieve this, it will match closely my normal habits.

38#of air in each tire! Does it ride like a iron wheel wagon?

I'm experimenting with things... yes it does add some roughness (I kinda like it that way)... and yes I am aware thats not good for the overall wear of the tire, thats not a concern, I replace my tires frequently.

anyways, bad news, my overall mileage for the 1000 miles last week was about 40 (I haven't formally calculated it yet). It was some really nasty weather all week and I spent quite some time driving in anger. So my analysis is that I am quite confident 47mpg is easily attainable but I don't think its a marker you can dictate... it will happen when the conditions are right and the driver is calm.

Mine rides just fine with 44psi. I finally replaced the stock Dunlops at 35,000 miles; well, actually 34,858. I'm still getting 37+mpgs with normal driving. In 'slow and steady' mode, 40 mpg is easy. My best tank was 49.65 with a Base AT, with 47mpg tanks before and after.

YMMV, of course.
