whining high pitched noise

Hello everyone.

I bought a new Honda Fit 2010 Sport (no nav) May 31 2010. While driving it to work I noticed a strange noise. I could hear it above my radio (which was pretty loud). Its hard to describe. At first I thought it sounded like air whistling, it was pretty high pitched. Maby similar (though not as loud) as the sound during a test of the emergency broadcast system. This sound only happens above 40MPH while pressing on the accelerator. If I let off of the accelerator it stops (though not exactly immediately, but pretty close).

Maby its a normal noise and my ears are just picking up on it, but its pretty annoying. I really would hate taking it back to the dealership again. (i had to take it back on 2nd day because the dealership hadn't programmed the TPMS, so the light came on after around 20 miles).

I'm not really good with cars, what do you all think? Anything easy I can check?

Thanks.

Maybe an air leak under the hood?

Hmm maby its a normal sound; according to (2010 Honda Fit Road Test - Consumer Guide Automotive)

"The engine is fairly quiet at idle, but produces a buzzy whine under acceleration, especially at higher engine speeds. "

Boy I hope I can get used to this sound and ignore it. Its such a frequency that I can hear it even with radio turned up.

what you're describing doesn't "sound" normal to me. i don't get any noise like that and i'm fairly sensitive to high-pitched sounds.

in the 1996 camaro that i used to drive, i'd have a high-pitched noise coming through the speakers because it had grounding issues.

I heard something similar while I was driving home from a long trip. It just randomly came on..sounded almost like a whistling sound. It happened for about 5-10 minutes and then cut out by itself, and hasn't happened since. Sounded like it was coming from the left side of the hood. At first when I heard it, I thought the car next to me needed their brakes replaced...but once that car passed and the noise stayed, I realized it was coming from the front/left of the car. Pretty weird.

My wife has an 09 MT. I couldn't tell if yours is an AT or MT.

I have never noticed any sounds like you describe. My wife has perfect hearing (she is a speech and hearing pathologist), has checked her hearing on an "often" basis and does not hear anything coming from the engine like you describe. I think you'll have to try to localize this problem.

I think the sound that Consume Guide is talking about is just the engine noise which could not be described as a high frequency pitch.

Mine is AT.

See file (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3654882/carnoise.3g2) for a video of the noise while driving. Its hard to hear mainly because its my phone so crappy recording. Listen for sound between (5-6, 8-13, 21-24, 27-on). I was accelerating while above 40. Odly I noticed while driving that the noise stops after around 52. So noise only happens between 40 and 52.

Anyway enjoy the grainy vid.

OH ALSO Use Quicktime to view. That is the only player that actually ran sound for vid. VLC and win media didnt. Dont know why; some codec thing i imagine but FYI.

I can't hear it either but I did convert it to avi so that more users can view it:

I noticed it when I first got my 2008 civic. Now it isn't either there or I have learned to tune it out.

I think I can hear it on your video. I've heard that sound in other cars, too. I believe it's the transmission, actually. You're just hearing the harmonic sounds that come from the spinning gears and other doo-dads. My second car was a Chrysler and it was known for having this and one other transmission noise. My third car was, unfortunately, yet another Chrysler. The sounds were far quieter on that one, but still there. The Honda sounds virtually the same so I don't really even notice it.

I would get it checkout out. If it bothers you enough to take and share videos of it, it's obviously something that needs to be addressed by your dealer. Good luck to you.

Do u happen to use premium fuel? After switching to PF I was experiencing the same problem. It didn't make that noise when I'm off the gas pedal but as soon as I get on gas I could hear the high pitch whistle (Kinda sounds like a tiny supercharger ). It went away after putting my HKS exhaust... Or I can't hear it because of the exhaust noise...

Sounds like a transmission noise. It may be normal for the AT. I would suggest you check to make sure you have sufficient fluid.
