DIY - Front Bumper Blackout - (EVO X Style)

So First off I have my grill and headlights done in Black. So I thought this mod would be a good addition to my blacked out front. First things First I made a photoshop of what I planned to do. Not the greatest but gave me what I needed. A picture

After looking at that image I was content to start the project. Your list of Materials will be as follows

MATERIALS LIST

1. Blue tape
2. Flathead Screwdriver
3. Abrasion pad of soft grit sandpaper.
4. Newspaper.
5. 1 can Krylon white Primer
6. 1 can Krylon Flat black
7. 1 can Krylon Gloss
8. Shammy

Picture of materials

STEP 1

Clean off the surface with soap and water. Make sure to get the underside of the bumper. I also considered taking off the bumper. So for those of you who prefer that. Do so now. Clean and Dry

STEP 2

Tape off the section you want to paint. I made one big tape line from the top to the bottom right on the side of the plastic bumper guard. Refer to pics for placement. This line follows the lines of the bumper pretty well.

TOP OF THE TAPE OFF LINE:

BOTTOM PORTION OF THE TAPE LINE. ONE CONSISTENT LINE:

STEP 3

Continue to tape off the rest of the bumper and spray zone with newspaper. Also I popped the hood up and removed the small plastic piece to access the front of the radiator. This allows me to drape newspaper down, so you do not get spray inside the engine bay. Screwdriver needed to pop the plastic piece out.

Completed Tape Job. Notice the draped newspaper behind bumper.

STEP 4

Clean Area again, and use your abrasive pad to rough up the surface.

STEP 5

You will prime the area with the Krylon primer. I had white, but black works just as fine. Do until you have an even coat. Let stand for 30 min ( I am using that time to write this DIY)

STEP 6.

Use the black Krylon Flat Black. Coat it until it is even and do as many times as necessary. I did it 3 times. Let stand for 30-40. Make sure it is completely dry before moving to step 7. If it is not, it will cause bubbles, and imperfections with the gloss coat.

STEP 7.

Use the gloss coat on the area. Only 1 or two coats needed. Let sit and remove tape when completed. Your bumper is now complete.

I think it looks good. The lines make it look like there is an inward fang down there now too. Overall I am satisfied

looks pretty good, but would like to see a picture that is more of a wide angle/see more of the car, etc.

I feel like the black should have gone out further, there's still silver peeking along the edge of the opening

I thought this at first, but looking at curvature of the bumper where it would look wierd. The lines of this bumper just aren't sharp enough for this.

What's to stop rocks from chipping the crap out of it?
I currently have the 3M clear bra on my whole front end and lower bumper down there. Could you put clear bra over that to keep it in perfect condition?

Whats to keep rocks from chipping the crap out of your normal paint job? You can 3M it sure. Otherwise treat it like any other painted bumper. Just re-spray if it comes time. Or touch up if needed

"Whats to keep rocks from chipping the crap out of your normal paint job?"

Thus my whole front end is clear bra'd. I just think a factory clear/paint is more durable than a spray clear/paint.

Just didn't know if clear bra would stick to a straight spray painted/clear surface.

Don't get me wrong. I like the look of it. I'm just worried about the durability.

Only thing im concerned with would be it fading. I did this to my spoiler which i now regret. I did everything correct, took time sanding, priming and painting and before a year its already faded to almost gray. I should have never painted it in the first place but the beer told me it was a good idea.

Me too. It's hard to tell what it does to the overall look of the car without seeing the whole car.
