If you knew how to drive a manual properly, you wouldn't be worrying about what gear you're in at a certain speed. If you're just cruising, ideally you should be in 5th. Just my two cents.

I've loaded up enough plugs with my old honda to be weary of driving ...leisurely. I know a lot of people here can shift at 2500 rpm without problems but I get flashbacks of car not starting and new v-powers every 6 months. If I drove that old thing spiritedly, it was happy for a year before the new sparklers had to go in.

Therefore I shift out of 1st at 4500 and every other gear is 3500-4000. Not heavy throttle, but not waiting either. Got 41.4 and 37.5 mpg on my last two trips too, with the AC believe it or not.

usually shift around 40mph, but will shift at 3.5K-4K RPM when necessary.

OK, so I have an Automatic Fit, but have had almost exclusively manuals before that.

I don't think I ever paid the slightest bit of attention to my shifting speed or my current gear. There are only three gears in any manual car: The right one, one too high, and one too low. If it's not right, shift it.

I frequently bounce against the end of the shift pattern on the Ninja looking for an imaginary 7th gear.

Pretty sure every guy wants to hit that imaginary gear. I've looked for 6th more than once and been bitterly disappointed every time...

so do you all think the fit's engine prefers 3500-4k?

It might just like a bit of herbie

if you're driving MT you dont go by speed, you go by RPM. on my MT fit, i find myself usually 2.3K or higher at cruising speed.
I always drove M/T, and except for rev match, I think it's easier to think in speed rather than rpm, because it's not the same rpm that is the right rpm, depending on the gear, and how close the gears are one frome each other. My first car didn't have a tach too.

I drive a MT

Sometimes I feel like 4k-4500 revs, sometimes 3k. With city driving, and lots of lights where I live, its useless to rev it 4-5k anyway

If you know you have to go fast to get the next light green, it's worth to floor it.

When it doesn't need the extra torque provided by the lower gears. Much like a human driver, it does so when conditions are right, not according to vehicle speed.

?!?

How could you do that?!?

Today, I decided to test how quickly I could accelerate to 60. But since I was only on local roads (with plenty of cops nearby).... I did my test only up to 40. In 1st gear, I almost bounced off the rev limiter at just under 30 mph. I shifted at just over 6k rpms.

I didn't time it, and its probably more of my perception than actuality... but it (getting to 40) was FAST.

I really need to find a long enough stretch of road where I can go from 0 to 60 without endangering myself and others... or getting a ticket.

For a car that isn't supposed to be "fast," I seem to want to push it more than when I was driving my brother's '95 Corvette. And this coming from a guy that would most likely be laughed out of a race.

Nope, I couldn't do it.

I bounced off the rev limiter at 30.

when i race my jdm fit, i usually shift 1st to redline, 2nd at 45mph, 3rd at 65mph, 4th at 80mph, and 5th at 100mph. sometimes i can get better shifts that allow me to hit 135mph in 5th gear. now in my nsx the order is 1st @ 35mph, 2nd @ 65mph, 3rd @ 95mph, 4 @ 110mph, 5th @ 130mph, 6th @ 155mph
