Manual Transmission: What are your shift points?

Where do you typically rev too before shifting?

I feel between 3200-4000 seems best for daily driving...what about you all?

If I'm not hustling the car or overtaking anybody, 2500-3000 RPM.

This way I run 60 km/h (37 mph) when I get to top gear. On a flat piece of road, the engine can still pull the car at a leisurely pace.

Usually shift between 3000-3500 in town... accelerating onto highways is a different story of course

I've never red-lined the thing, but I've been close. I shift before 4,000 when I'm not in a mood. It's more like 5600 when my day isn't well and I have a highway on-ramp to play on....

I guess I drive like the old fart of the group. I usually shift at about 2500. Around here, that seems to keep up with traffic just fine...and sometimes I'm actually still slowed a lot by cars in front of me.

I think this question is like asking for opinions on how to shave your face. Do whatever feels right to you.

That's me. The best time to shift is when the engine will pull it comfortably when you engage the next gear. Which on a straigh leveled road and an empty car for me is about 2500 -3000 rpm.

3-4k anything in the 2000's is way to low in my personal opinion/preference. I don't shift at a certain number habitually...it should depend on the moment and what's going on around you. Merging onto a highway i'll take it up into the 5-6k range.

When I DO overtake though, I have no hesitation about spinning the engine to the redline if needed. It's all about minimizing the time exposed to danger, especially on a two-lane road. My car already has a power deficit, so doing a half-hearted, early-upshifting overtake is usually a bad idea.

On long uphill stretches like the roads of Nasugbu going back to Manila, I frequently made use of 2nd gear and wound my little 1.3L engine to redline as I overtaked slower traffic.

Agreed, I think the Fit is asking to be rev'd. I take my '91 Accord up to about 3K (or a little lower) for shifts when I am really cruising around slowly but the Fit can only be shifted under 3K in very rare circumstances. Thus I usually shift around 3200…a little higher…or MUCH higher depending on the situation.
