Manual transmission and RPM

I was just curious at what RPMs is everyone shifting at?

Changes constantly depending on driving conditions and driver mood. There are recommended shift points in the owners manual that are probably there because they netted the manufacturer the best overall efficiency numbers.

I usually take it up to to 3,500 to 5,000 depending on what gear I am in and how much room I have in front of me. I will skip gears a lot of times instead of shifting at a lower point.

Wow reading the comments I don;t know wha to think.

The 1 to 2 gear I shift it at 3000 the others i shift them at 2.500. I drive slowly not rush here. I get in city 40 mpg. So not bad and the motor is pretty much silence. So I do not see why to shift early unless i wanna get fun I shift it at 5000 at least.

I'm a believer in 'exercising' my engines periodically, say at least once a month. So, I'll run the engine up to redline at full throttle when accelerating onto a freeway. I even do this on my wife's minivan (but not when she is in the car, HeeHee).

Full throttle operation helps keep injectors clean, and the piston bores smooth. Did you know that engines are most efficient at wide open throttle?

No I didn't not know that. I just do it every two weeks or when I am bored but I need to be careful there are speed cam radars all over the city. I already own at least 6thousand dollars in fines. But I have another states license plates so I fines does not come to my home. Unless a police stops me and do a background check. Then I'll be in serious trouble

If I'm just "driving", I generally shift around 3,000 or so. That means I'm shifting into fifth at about 50 MPH or so, and 6th as I settle into cruising speed.

On days when I'm , then all bets are off. All the fun is found in the first four gears.

On my Fit, fifth is the loneliest gear ... most times I go from fourth directly to sixth ... sometimes third to sixth. My mileage might suffer a bit, but my clutch doesn't mind. I don't really watch the tach, I go more by the engine sound, a habit acquired in the olden days when tachs were less prolific.

If you 'wind it out' in first or second you don't get noticed by speed enforcers (at least on freeways).

I don't pay attention to the RPM gauge, I just shift when it feels right. The lack of torque in that motor is awesome because it really forces you to use the revs to keep the car moving.

I love winding it all the way out!

Using full synthetic oil and shifting between 4000-6500 RPM+ routinely for the past 8k miles unless I am really trying to stretch a tank of gas.

Short shifting between 2000-3000 I can get 40 MPG city which is remarkable but it lurches a little bit on post-shift clutch engagement for me when shifting under 3000.

Page 326 of owners manual gives shift points...

1st to 2nd is 16mph... which is weird.. like 4000rpm
2nd to 3rd is 26
3rd to 4th is 35
4th to 5th is 41
5th to 6th is 43.. proving how USELESS 5th gear is...

I usually just watch the green/blue light and bog the little overboxed motor... it actually has quite the low end torque...

I shift around 3-4 for first and 2.5-3 thereafter unless pushing it for grins.

Driving home tonight at 84mph my tac was at 4,000. Definitely not used to that.

Redline! 1 -> 2 -> whatever gear is appropriate for the desired speed

I drive like a hooligan and still get 34 mpg

IF I remember I think I'll check the rpms at each of these gears/speeds.
Just off of memory from the last couple weeks of driving I'd say it's probably around +/- 2,000 rpms.

Now that's turning a fault into a feature!
