A/T to M/T trade-in
Do you like/use the features on the sport? USB, fog Lights, (think the Rear sway bar gets used), like the armrest, etc... If so, you may want to bargain that in if you decide to trade. get them to install the armrest, add the USB and maybe some other things.
I'd miss the features on the sport too much to trade for anything other than a sport.
tough spot to be in.

no shit a dealer would take a trade for a sport automatic on a base model fit manual,
thats a $ 2500 profit for the dealer on the trade
if you really want a manual fit
sell your car outright and buy a manual fit or something else

I have an 09 BSP Sport A/T, with 18,500 miles on it. I've grown frustrated with the paddle shifters and just get bored while driving. The months go by and I want a M/T more and more.
Well yesterday I found out a dealership 50 miles away has an 09 Base TW M/T with 19,000 miles on it. I called the dealership and asked if they were willing to do a "trade in" and they seem to really want my car. My car is almost completely OEM. All I've done is painted my wheels and emblems, and tinted windows (the car they're selling has tinted windows and blacked out headlights).
My question is, has anyone else done this or know of anyone that's done this? I have never traded in a car before. They are selling their car for $15,700 and my loan pay-off is $17,000. I'm even willing to pay more than their asking price... but maybe I shouldn't say this up front? Or should I just stay home and be okay with my A/T? Suggestions or comments?

A new 2010 Base Fit manual lists for $15,600. First thing I would do is some homework about prices. Keep in mind most cars sell for less than list price.
That 09 manual base with 20K miles should sell for about $13,000. He's probably got about $11,000 invested in it. His "profit" if you buy it at $15,600 is about $4,600. He can afford to pay off your loan and sell your car for a tidy profit. And I'm sure he'd much rather have a Sport auto sitting on his lot than a Base manual.
You should stay home and be okay with your A/T. If you do this you will wind up owing almost as much ($16K?) for a car that's worth a lot less ($11K on a trade in) and the dealer will be laughing at you.
Edit: forgot to mention interest rates on used cars are more than new; you'll be looking at the same or higher payments.

I really can't follow your numbers, but it looks like you're coming out on the short end. If you're planning on playing the car deal with a car dealer you have slightly less odds of a deal that coming home from Las Vegas with cash in your pocket.
If you want a lesson in cut throat car dealing it could be fun. You've got nothing to loose and you're free to walk out the door at any time - return and see if they really want to deal. Faget about paying more than they are asking - you want to always pay less.
_Trick is finding the bottom line where both of you are getting a bargain.

My wife has paddle shifters and I agree that M/T is better. Unless you are going to track the car, there's no reason to trade. Just use that money to buy aftermarket parts, or wait for the next model to come out (if there's ever one). Plus, when you tell people that it has paddle shifters they go, "Cool!"
