Manual transmission resale value

Anybody trade in a manual transmission car to the dealer before? How bad is the resale hit vs an auto? I imagine dealers don't like taking in manual trannys.

My first thought is...buy what you like. One minute of happiness at trade in isn't worth living with something you don't want for years.

That being said, I have found that the resale value on manual cars is slipping over time. It used to be almost a wash, but with more and more drivers not learning how to drive a manual, the size of the manual market is shrinking.

I just went to kbb.com and used our Fit as a guide. It would be worth $280 more if it were an auto. So, less than the $995 extra the auto costs new. Either way it's worth less than $2,000 as a trade, so who cares. LOL

I'd pay a premium to buy a used manual transmission car.

^^^^ This ^^^^ When I was shopping for my car, the salesdude was about peeing his pants that I wouldn't consider buying one with the CVT.....nope, I wanted a manual, and was ready to walk...he "accidentally" stumbled across the only manual they had, test drove it two different times, and the deal was done. We drive our cars until they're basically worthless anyway, don't even think about trade-in/resale value.

IMO the reason the auto is "worth" more is because it's an option that costs more when buying new. not sure it has anything to do with functionality, just numbers.

I got my 2015 LX manual from a VW dealer, they had it listed for close to $1k under blue book, they had a significantly older Fit Sport auto listed for the same price.

True, but he has another thread asking which to buy if any. He doesn't own either yet, so it's kind of related.

I suspect if the dealer sold me a car for a significant amount under book value, they likely paid the previous owner less for it. I can't prove it, but I think it's relevant.

Around here about 5-6% of cars are sold with a MT. On the used market they are snapped up immediately and are hard to find.

I wonder how many of us who prefer or even insist on a manual also feel like we're too smart to pay new car prices- we could be thrifting our way out of used options existing.

I think the value would be equal. Manual cars were cheaper new, but they are much more rare. All it takes is one buyer... and manual people generally will not settle for an auto.

When I bought my Wrangler new in 2014, there were TWO manuals on dealership lots within a 100 mile radius of my home. I bought one of them.

trav- sounds good u grabbed the MT!

when i was shopping around for my Golf-R earlier this summer there were only a handful that had MT and only one dealer in the 500 mile radius with a white one that i wanted. luckily the dealer was only 1hr+ drive away so i snapped her up real quick.

the dealership was real good too. i can see myself driving out there again if i ever buy another VW.

I got a good trade-in for my '09 MT. I probably got about $800 less than the automatic would have brought. Then again the auto was $800 more new, so it all evens out.

The best trade in offer I have received so far for my 2015 EX 6 spd has been 12.5K.
