New 08 Fit Spot Owner - Noob Questions

First off I am glad I stumbled across this place. If I have an 2008 Model Fit, it is the GE version right? I am not what anyone would call a "car guy" and I have never really took an interest in my vehicle until now. My fit is the first car I purchased on my own from a dealership. That whole process was hellish but that post is for another time.

I purchased the Fit Sport with 40k miles but its in perfect shape but I do have a few questions and annoyances. Not being a car guy this is hopefully where you come in!

First off my MPG is around 29, not bad but not great. I drive in Auto and don't use the paddle shifters, half highway+half city. Looking at the official MPG it looks about average but some people here talk about 35MPG+. Any advice?

Second wind noise is really bad. The weather stripping around the doors seems fine but it seems like most of the noise i am hearing is wind related. I tried searching but most posts relate to sound deadening mats etc. What can I apply around the doors if anything to help with this?

One of the issues with driving is that sometimes it seems jumpy when accelerating/decelerating. It seems like its shifting "hard" like the transition from different gears is not smooth. If this is normal behavior I will deal with it but other opinions would be nice.

Thats all for now, I have a ton more questions but I am going to spend some time reading for now.

Thanks everyone, nice to be here!

One more thing, the car didn't come with floor mats

Does anyone have any good recommendations of nice all weather mats?

Mats depend on your needs. OEM mats are custom fit and can be acquired from all dealers or on eBay at comparable "expensive" prices. I myself went to WalMart and bought a decent all weather mat set (4) for a fraction of the price. I bought the Michelin all weather set and they work fine. All about what you want.

Cool Actually...

The US version 2008 Fit is the GD version. The GE version started with the 2009's...

I drive mostly in Suburban areas and get from 28-31 mpg...

Took a road trip and averaged over 40 mpg going slow...

People with higher mileage are doing more highway miles...

Window visors might cut down on some of the wind noise.

Not sure about the jumpiness, maybe have the dealer reset the ECU?

Have tried both factory mats, but probably would go for WeatherTech next.

The factory carpet mats seem to be wearing out and curling already (2 months in), don't like the feel of the Honda rubber mats beneath my feet, but might reinstall them and put carpet remnants inside them, even though they recommend against it.

I would probably also go with the weather tech mats for my next set.

The visors do seem to cut down on the wind noise too.

I'm not sure what to tell you about the other stuff. I have a manual transmission. I can get up to about 45+ MPG constantly using mild hypermiling techniques but I average 35-40MPG in nice weather. No hard acceleration, driving the speed limit and coasting when ever possible.

Yea that little 1.5 liter can be thirsty at times, although if you get worse than 25 mpg something is terribly wrong with your car, I say this cause the last tank fill up which I'm still finishing it off, I'm at 250 no low gas yet and I've been driving it "spirited" I mean flat out flogging it in some instances, any v8 would have been out of juice along time ago

Wind noise is bad if you keep the rear windows rolled too far down. Same is true for the fronts. There is a sweet spot for both where you can get ventilation with minimum noise--you need to play around as height & seat positions vary with driver.
I have the door visors sitting in my garage--have not yet installed them.

I would go for the Floor Liners rather than the regular mats...
WeatherTech - WeatherTech FloorLiner - car floor mats liner, floor tray protects and lines the floor of truck and SUV carpeting from mud, snow, water and dirt
