My Conversion from Base to Sport Front - The Parts You Need

BEFORE:

AFTER:

Certainly my recommendation for someone is to buy the Sport model rather than convert, I jumped on a great deal on a base model even though I really wanted a Sport, however It's too late to change things now. I got my Base for about 3,000 less than I could have got a Sport so I figure I have some money to play around with and fix some of the things I don't like about the Base. This thread will be a rough guide since a lot of people seem to ask the question and different nuggets of info seem to be spread around.

Front End - I installed the Sport front end components including Fog's, I used the Base fog kit parts for the in cabin electrical portion, however these parts can be ordered separately.

Side Trim - I am going to see how it looks without side trim for the time being. If I do not like it (highly possible) I will go with the mugen side trim as installation is much much easier on a Base and not much more expensive when you consider all the fastener costs, drilling etc..

Mirror Skull Caps - I ordered and installed the Tafetta White mirror covers.

Process: Follow the Base OEM Foglight install for bumper removal / install and harness installation. While the bumper is off replace the inner fenders, you have have to drill out the 3 plastic plugs on each side to get the inner fenders off. To remove the mirror caps refer the thread here: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...tml#post622937

Here is a flickr gallery showing the process: http://www.flickr.com/photos/unsped/...7625825986574/

Sounds like you've got quite a task ahead of you. I also scored a fantastic deal on the Base, and thus live with the desire for a few missing parts. I really don't have a problem with the Base bumper. Fog lights are rarely necessary where I live, so I've never been much a fan of having them. I wouldn't mind having the Sport bumper, but I'd keep it fog-light-free.

picked up the bumper today and dropped it off to get painted .. 200 for the bumper, 450 to get painted.... ya it hurts lol

i've also debated about just covering the fog light hole with a black plastic cover as in sunny ca the weather is almost perfect, i do like how they look though.

i figure switching to the sport front will cost me about 1,000 ... then if i want the side trim its another 620, 250 for rear wing (i think it will look unique without it though) and 800 or so for some rim's and tires. i'm going to run it without side trim and use my steelies with crx center caps and chrome lugs and see how i like it before i add other expenses. I have a feeling that the sport front and some nice rims will look nice and give somewhat of a cleaner / leaner look than the full sport kit.

$450 seems really high for just a bumper spray.

$450.00 is high. I would check other places. I got my S2000 rear bumper painted for $150.00 Also, you should consider the side skirts. The sport bumper hangs lower and will have that huge chin look from the side views. Check this link for the pictures.

interesting thread...
I have a base fit and got the mugen kit put on (front & rear and exhaust)
I'm pleased with it but one thing i'm not able to work out is the rear spoiler.
That's on my to do list... along with lowering it

Following this thread to see how things work out for you.

Some good news, picked the bumper up today painted. Looks great, and I got a little bit of a discount was only $375. It's a body shop I take all my stuff too, and I live in an expensive area ... so I'm happy.

*update* according to collegehills honda the Sport model has the Fog harness integrated into the main harness, so we will need to use the Base OEM Fog addon harness, part number is now added to the list above. Below is a pic of the two harnesses. thanks collegehills!

Bernardi parts came in today, did a little bit of prepping before the sun went down. Mirror skull caps and wheel locks won't be here until Monday but that won't stop me from working on the bumper. Not looking forward to the locking tabs on the bumper edge those seem to be the hardest part for people. Also not looking forward to having the bumper on and saying ... hrmm that looks funny without side trim and a rear spoiler and having to order those!

oh.. you'll order those sometime soon. Modifying a car is a terminal disease. once you've got it, you can never stop... until you get a new car... then it starts all over again.

Wow I thought I was the only one who did the full swap... I found out the hard way bout the inner fenders as you saw in my thread. I got a cash deal on my paint. If you look @ my thread (link in signature) you can see the bumper is darker than the car. Thanks to Lifetime warranty and the owner is a friend of mine, It will be repainted maybe next week if the weather holds up. It was sprayed 01 Dec. Kinda cold and stuff so weather and humidity can factor in even with a booth. I'll stick with his story. So I need to hurry and get those inner fenders cause it's coming off again! I like the transformation. I love the way that the Base headlights look especially with SSM. No chrome headlights for us. I need to do the mirrors but I will do them when I do the Mugen sides. Waiting for warm weather to install the rear spoiler. Not excited about drilling the holes. I'm just glad everything else comes painted!

Great job on the writeup!

@corp
the bumper was about 200, the paint was 375, foglights 260, and probably 60 dollars on the grill insert and various screws, 120 for the inner fenders... so i would say $1,000 is a rough estimate. side mirrors another 120, 260 for oem spoiler, 600 for mugen sides .. so $2000 total. if you want to get crazy, 450 for mugen front, 450 for mugen rear, and 800 for some aftermarket tires and rims... or $3700 total. my base was about 3,000 less than a sport ... so for $700 more than a sport i would end up with a mugen fit and aftermarket wheels and only miss out on rear stablizer, cruise control (i dont use), different color seats (gray shows lint less and doesn't heat up as much), map light (can be added), armrest (i added center armrest), usb audio (which sucks), and paddle shifters (which look neat but are useless on a 107hp AUTOmatic).

i would make sure you have added room for the modifications on your car insurance

@rayssm

it was your thread that made me think it was something worth doing, although maybe i have you to blame now fortunately my paint turned out well, it is a large shop that does alot of insurance work so i was willing to pay a little more. i imagine being plain white it's alot easier than matching a metallic color as well, plus they had my car for a few hours to match it.

i think the upgrade bug is spreading to my major organs and beginning to take over. i ended up putting the mugen sides and oem spoiler on order, hopefully they will be here in a week or so ... and i know it's only a matter of time before i feel compelled to get the mugen front, kinda sucks about it covering the fog light access so replacing the lenses etc.. will be not so fun.. but it will be different than all the sport models in town so i can say that my base conversion is unique and not simply an attempt to be a sport. i think i'm with you and will skip the mugen rear.

... and like that my tax return dissapears!

Dropped the base bumper off Friday to get a positive paint match. I take the Sport Bumper in Wednesday. I hope to have it back on the car by the weekend! I need to get those inner fenders by Friday! The car looks great but you went OEM sport wheels. You probably could have got some nice aftermarket ones for less. Unless you got a GREAT price on them.

The SSM paint is a hard match 3 part metallic paint. At least my paint guy was real nice about the rework. I think he cringed a little when he saw it one the car!

Keep up the great work and keep the pics coming as you put the parts on and I'll do the same!

When you say Base Fog Light Kit and have everything with the part numbers listed below, can I just buy the Base Fog Kit and expect everything listed to be included in the kit?
