Flea, I didn't mean your circumstances. But have you considered using the motorcycles to tow the Fit?

[QUOTE=MikePDaTruth;967112]

I think what gives SUV owners a bad name are buyers that purchase them strictly as items of opulence. You know what I mean...the douchebags riding around in yellow Hummer H2T's and Escalades on incredibly gaudy 26'' rims, and soccer moms that THINK they need to drive a land barge when a smaller, more economical crossover (or Fit!) would probably suit just fine. I think it comes with consumers thinking that they need more than what they really do. You're riding around in a huge vehicle that you have no practical use for...just being unnecessarily wasteful.

A base 2011 Escalade starts at $63,160. I could think of probably 20-25 cars in that price bracket or cheaper that I would rather have, and are more economical. I know it's a matter of personal taste as well...but still.

As long as they pay for their own gas, why are they "douchebags"? As long as they are willing to pay $50,000 for a vehicle why are they "douchebags". They don't affect your wallet in the least.

You and I have no right to criticize someone else for the things that they like and pay with their own money.

See what I mean?

Champagne, I probably could tow the fit with the ATV.

They're not affecting my wallet? You sure about that?

Last I checked, land barge SUVs have abysmal fuel efficiency and massive fuel tanks. That means that they not only burn through gas at an alarming rate, they also take a hell of a lot more to fill up. This inflates demand for crude oil, driving up gas prices, and hits MY wallet (and everyone else's) as a result.

Its these people that unnecessarily drive SUVs because they think they are cool that irk me for this reason. If you have a use for it, fine, I'm not mad at you. If you drive a Hummer because you think it's "cool:"

1.) You're costing everyone more money.
2.) You're being exceptionally wasteful with our resources.
3.) It's not.

Our Fit would not be able to move either one. Yes, most of the time I am alone in my car. Don't be so quick to judge those around you in the gas hogs.
Besides, most of us can afford it.

SUVs are like condoms, you don't need them most of the time, but when you do, you need them desperately.

Flea
so what you're saying is you need that 13mpg gas hog to go waste more gas with your recreation vehicles

I wouldn't say you need an SUV, you choose to have one so you can go do the activities that you like (which, incidentally, involves using more petrol)

sorry, I just found this funny coming from someone that remembers the embargo.

Yes, they drive up gas prices for the rest of us. They also pollute more, their vehicles make our rides less safe and reduce our visibility of the road ahead.

And they're entitled to do it, just like I'm entitled to fly a small plane, make fun of Paris Hilton for money and only buy the stuff that's on sale for below cost.

As far as towing, I figure that 3 100 hp motorcycles could probably tow a Fit with no problem.

FLEA there is a reason I suggested you take some Macro and Micro Econ courses. You just demonstrated it beautifully.

Critical thinking is tough I hear.

I saw a linkage between some of the postings in another thread as follows:

Never seen so many guys so willing to give up our freedom. The freedom to engage in the activities that we like versus what the government deems proper and justified.

Do you live in a 3 bedroom house. Do you really need it? The government might decide a 2 berdroom house would suit you just fine.

Where do you draw the line? Okay, most of you have already decided that an SUV is not approved. Well, what is? What about a Ford Fusion? What about a Honda Accord, when a Honda Fit would do.

What is the acceptable MPG to you so willing to control everything? We know that the Hummer's mileage is not approved by you guys. What about 18 MPG, is that okay? What about 25? 30? 35? What is the minimum acceptable to you all?

How about Taco Bell? I like their burritos, I know they are not the best of health food for me, but I like them. Champagne, would you make them illegal too. Does the fact that I and so many others eat them piss you off too? Okay, that's it the government can outlaw them too.

Shoot, let's just throw dirt motorcycles, snowmobiles, dune buggies into the bag of things that piss off Champagne and should be outlawed, after all they make fuel demand go up.

How about kiteboarding? They don't use fuel, but wait....many things are made from petroleum byproducts. Maybe the kite material is one of them, and the board too. Just doesn't seem right to consume so much petroleum just to entertain the thousands that like to kiteboard just because it is....cool. That's it ......illegal too.

Where do we draw the line?

More importantly, who will draw the line?

This is a free country, isn't it? BrainChampagen would have you relinquish your freedom to him....because doing otherwise just pisses him off.

How much electricity is this computer wasting right now while I engage in such an "unnecessary" activity, wasting fuel.

BrainChampagne, you will be all for this taking of our freedoms until they touch one of yours, then........I hope it isn't too late.

Start using your brain....Champagne.

Uh, how about you go back and re-read my postings on this thread? What exactly do you think I've proposed to outlaw?

Exxon made over $45 billion in profits last year (that's Billion with a capital "B"!!!). They paid $0 in US federal taxes. They have 20 wholly owned subsidiaries in the Caymans, Bermuda, etc, to help them evade federal taxes.

Flea I think you're missing the point here. You're comparing apples to oranges in your previous post.

I am not calling for government to step in and "regulate" what we can and can't do, because that never works. I believe you're misconstruing our opinions with this.

It is completely your right to go out and spend $60,000 on a gigantic SUV that gets 10mpg if that's what you want to do. I am just asking, before you make such a purchase, take the time to think what the consequences and/or impact of that purchase will be...and not just for yourself. You are not the only person that lives in this country.

hogwylde did you think that such heated discussion would take place when you started this thread? :P

That caught my eye - here's the story: What The Top U.S. Companies Pay In Taxes - Forbes.com

We should all be proud - NOT

Right, Cardnal, that's the article. The source? "Forbes, capitalist tool." Not exactly a commie rag.

I knew right away where FLEA stood after his first post about his retirement and oil companies. I too hold ownership in a couple groups, but at least I know what the hell I am talking about.

Then when his strawman arguments and general ignorance get shredded, he resorts to "your attacking our freedoms you libby lib libs!" and not once ever actually addressed the substance of any of the posters responding to his drivel.

This is the mind of the "conservative" base, the ones I was trying to explain to him that have been manipulated to work and vote against their own interests.

He genuinely has no clue how all these dots are connected around him, but does what he is told as long as it fits his confirmation bias.

They may not pay taxes but you should still feel some sympathy for them, it's not cheap to buy senators and congresspeople.
