Question about the iPod controls for non-Navi
Sorry if this has been asked before or it has been answered on another forum category but...
When I use my iPod on my non-Navi Fit, I want to scroll through the artists but it always starts at A. If I want to go the let's say The Strokes, that's a whole lot of scrolling. Is there a way to quick scroll or go to a certain letter? Thanks.

Nope.
You're better off stopping the car, unplugging the iPod, do the search ON the iPod, select the song and then plugging it back in.
I have nearly 7000 songs on my iPod (takes up 33 GB)... Attempting to browse via song, artist or even album title will usually end up crashing the connection (it acts like you were never doing anything).
I just stick to playlists or the previously mentioned search method.

But, even though the HU in the Fit is made by Alpine, they didn't include that feature.
Trying to scroll through about 7000 songs takes a LONG, LONG, LONG... LONG time.
Yea i either go one of 2 routes.
One - Pull over and unplug the thing, pick my artist and plug it back in.
Two - I started setting up a bunch of playlists...as much i hate itunes. I have my To and Fro work list, Auto Cross list, Angry List, Happy List, and of course "Jammin to the 80's"

My wife has an iPod in the Ridgeline and we picked up the harman Kardon Drive+Play for that vehicle. It is sooo much better in navigation than the fit's head unit and the total cost was $20 new (clearance). They can still be had online new for $30 and work REAL well. Not sure about iPhone 4 Connectivity as they are older but the alpine EX-10 probably would be closer match for that. I'd say get an old iPod for the car just for music & Playlists. Most people are getting towards their 2nd iPod now anyway.

My current car, a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe, suffers from a similar issue. I circumvented trying to scroll through all 1500 of my songs by creating a bunch of playlists that contain titles arranged alphabetically. I labeled them 'Titles - A', 'Titles - B' and so on and so forth so they're all grouped together with no interruptions. The only downside is that you are responsible for uploading music as you add it but quite frankly, I think it's worth it. If I want to listen to all my songs, I just go to Songs and hit random.
It may be something to try.

I do not own an Apple product (save a g3 running linux) but on my memory stick I use with USB I can add folders and scroll through them first then into the folder and scroll through the songs. Does the ipod prevent this? Is the use unable to control the storage file structure? If so, an A folder, a B folder, etc. would help.

In some respects, using a plain flash drive is easier.
FACEPALM
The issue isn't that the iPod's folder-system is flawed... It's that thousands of songs can be a pain to sort through without the swift search feature or scroll wheel of the iPods.
I have about 2500 songs, which is impossible to scroll through w/ the Fit. It's up to the user to narrow down the collection in playlists. I have about 50 active playlists that I listen to, which makes it much easier to sort through. Typically I label my playlists "artist : album" i.e. "weezer : blue album."
I guess you also organize by genre and alphabet "hip-hop : a-c" by artist.
Of course, this means dealing with iTunes, which for me on a mac is fine... But man it is a poor piece of software on the PC.
**An iPod Classic does work as a mass storage device so long as you enable it to in iTunes. The flash iPods may not though.

I think the older iPods (classic?) allowed you to have access to the available space to use as mass storage, but the music files were kept separate.
The iPod touch is a different matter. No file access, everything is through some app (unless you hack it).
