The upper storage bin, OR, how my Fit melted my iPod

Yep. The wifey left our old 1st gen iPod in the upper storage bin over the weekend down here in FL, and it no longer works. So fair warning to all- if you're parked in direct sunlight in a warm climate, do NOT leave anything electronic up there! Mark W.

fit is a greenhouse on wheels and as with electronics... heat is the enemy but it could just be that the ipod has crapped out on it's own.

In defense of The Fit? Parking in direct sunlight, heat? Happens with almost any vehicle.

Sunshade and a cracked window, problem solved.

It wasn't The Fit that melted your Ipod, it was leaving it in a vehicle parked in direct sunlight and expecting that it wouldn't melt- that melted your Ipod.

Well, we don't have a garage, and leaving the windows cracked isn't an option- we get about a gallon per square yard of dew in the morning, which would certainly be worse, and live on a crushed coral (VERY dusty) lot with lots of cars and trucks pulling in and out all day (we live on a horse farm).
Even still, I leave my own iPod in my Jeep all day, every day for as long as we've been down here. Never had an issue, and that vehicle is as well-sealed as Swiss cheese! I'm 95% certain the iPod didn't crap out for any other reason.

Just wanted to give a PSA for people in similar situations- she hadn't thought there'd be an issue since the iPod was in a covered enclosure, but apparently thought wrong. So it goes Mark W.

If it was a 1st gen ipod, it was 10 years old at this point. Not that I like the idea of disposable electronics or anything, but its already served its useful life by now.

All the non-flash based iPods use mini hard drives that have plastic platters in them that are prone to melting. That is likely what got hot and warped causing your iPod to malfunction.

For prolonged storage, I'd use the lower box which would not get direct sunlight. Easy enough to route a usb extension cable from the upper to lower box so it's hidden too. A sun shade in the windshield would also be a good idea down in FLA. If you have a sport with black interior then it's going to get toast no matter what. Personally, I'm going for tinted windows and a sunshade to keep my fit from being a heat trap during the summer here in Chicago. My car sits outside all day too, but I don't have horse farm dust added to the mix.

wow, my 3rd gen iPod crapped out like 5 years ago from normal use, never left in the car. Impressive that a first gen lasted this long.

That may have been the last functioning 1st gen in existence. You're Fit may face charges for harm against an endangered species.

There are those of us who work for a living who can't afford to spend money on replacing things that (up until Monday) aren't broken just to have something newer and shinier. Spending $200-300 on a new iPod that does exactly the same thing I use the old one for (play music) that doesn't do that any better than the old one is nothing short of wasteful.
And hollis, the endangered species made me laugh- thanks Mark W.

This thread has gotten funny. all iPods that will work in the fit are no more than 6.5 years old as they require a USB connection. 1st gen iPods won't work on a FIT as they require a firewire Interface. It's also scary that the iPod hasn't even reached 10 years old. (came out in 2002 but most people know the click wheel which was late 2004+) I've got the iPod with Dock Connector (the 1st generation with the dock) and it has the 4 buttons ABOVE the wheel, not integrated into it like the more modern ipods(click wheel) - can't use it in the FIT as it too is firewire only. My wife has a 5G Video, we had a Mini (gave it away) and we have 2 nanos and a touch. (the last 5 work in the fit)

As for other players... I also have my Archos Jukebox Studio 20 still in use which was PRE iPod's existance. bought in 2001. I sold my Creative Nomad Jukebox 6GB HDD based player about 4 years ago which I bought in 2000 If I remember correctly. Anyone want my Rio Riot 20GB player? Had that one in 2002 for my Integra.

Actually, they WILL work- you just need an adapter, which costs ~$5.
That iPod of mine had a good run. I still had some of the same music on it from when I first got it, which was kind of a throwback playlist Mark W.

October 2001, not 2002. So not quite 10 years, but really close. The 3G ipod (the first with the Dock) will work with USB, just not charge. It doesn't work in the fit though, which was a disapointment to me as I still had mine and was saving it for use in whatever car I ended up buying.

Mine won't work on a pc or MAC USB connection. (not even the split USB/Firewire cable works - cable works on others)

I bought my Archos in 2001 and the iPod wasn't available at that time. Also, Checked apple's site.. says october 21 of 2002 is when it was available. This year will be 9 years for the iPod... I wonder what apple will do for it's 10 years of iPod.
