Best time to get accurate calculation

of gas mileage ? Have tried it at a little over the 1/2 mark ( 192.6 / 5.552 = 34.69 calculated , Fit avg : 38.4 ) and a bit above 3/4 ( 98.8 mis / 2.051 gals = 48.17 m.p.g. calculated , Fit avg. : 40.9 ) only to get wild swings of gas mileage . So , 1/4 of a tank to get best results ? Does the gas tank give others a fit when it comes to accurate gas mileage readings ?

I have only had my fit two days, but what I will do is the same as I did for all my other cars. I keep a book in the glove box and keep the maintenance records in the front and fuel data in the back. I write down the mileage since the last fill up (using the trip meter) the amount put in by the attendant (NJ, I pay less and don't even have to get out of my car. :P ) and the date, leaving a space in the middle for the calculation. and then just keep a long term running average.

the best way to calculate economy is over time. (multiple fill-ups, etc...) also, the closer the tank is to empty when you fill it up, the more accurate each tank will be when calculated.

Keep a log in the glove box or use a program for your smartphone to track your fuel consumption.

For those that want to do it electronically, here's my Fuel Economy Calculator. It was built in Excel 2007 but for those who don't have 2007 (or 2003 with the free MS converter for 2007), you can Download OpenOffice.org or get the PortableApps version of OpenOffice.org and stick it on a flash drive. I tested it with Portable Apps OOo version 3.2 with no issues.
Feel free to download & use.

We've been keeping logs of gas mileage for years . We also have an ECO-METER hooked up to the computer of the car . The log includes type/name of gas , amount of gas , miles ( trip B ) , overall temp , date of fill , ECO reading ( overall m.p.g. ) , Fit reading ( overall m.p.g. ) , and the calculated mileage ( no. of mis. divided by amount of gas ) . Will wait until 1/4 of a tank or less for next fill to see if more accurate . Thanks

I use an Android app called Mileage. I've only filled up once so there wasn't enough data to start showing the charts. It has a bunch of statistics like monthly cost, best/worst/average fuel economy, distance between fill ups, etc. Best part is it's free!
