Poll, Driveing 55 MPH

Should people advocating driving 55 MPH on modern super highways be banned from posting?

Or is it just me that finds this unacceptable and dangerous?

I drive at maximum speed 55 mph on right lane. I see no problem with this. You can save lot of money doing it and it is more secure.

I live in Canada and here WE DO respect the fact that slower cars are on right lane... Not like in crazy USA when people are driving in every lane at every speed...

Ah ok, now your 55 mph makes sense. See I go in the left lane when I need to pass other wise I stay in the right lane. I do well over the posted speed limit(hate having to waste my life away in a car). But I do get over a good quarter mile behind the person I'm going to pass and then get back over just incase, God forbid, there is someone on the road going faster than me.

No need to bash the US homie. Sounds like the only place you've driven in the US is yankee country. Those guys drive like assholes.

I drive at 55 mph about 99% of my time on the highway. Sometimes lower. Always in the right lane, however if its a single lane I'll let a queue build up behind me. I no scare.

BTW: If someone passes me out with a turn signal I flip em off.

Spent some time in Canada, Can not believe they have not run you off the road going 55! Unless you are averaging in traffic jams on the QEW.

Which part of Canada? When I was in Quebec, there were slow cars in the left lane, and the faster cars in the left lane were driving half on the shoulder past the left lane, so they could shine their brights and honk at the slower cars hogging the left lane.

55 is great for gas mileage. I'm talking 45 mpg. Too bad I don't care about gas mileage

I do care about gas mileage , That's one of the reasons I bought the Fit.

Daily turnpike driver. Slowest I go on highways is 60 and that's construction (unless posted lower than 55). Usually go about 70 consistent!

55mph is not practical on the freeways in the DFW area where I live, its dangerous as you'd be going 20 or more under the average speed, getting the horn and finger constantly.
I can get 36mpg and keep the speeds around 65+ and I'm still getting passed often, I'm happy with that.

Smile Well...

The 55 mph speed limit was foisted upon us by insurance lobbyists, and when it was finally repealed they predicted mass carnage from the increased speed limits. But instead deaths have decreased every year since it's repeal and states are still raising their speed limits.

Unfortunately in the Northern Virginia area, this arbitrary number is still the norm on the highways in the area. This is mostly so that the revenue collectors can have a field day pulling over cars that disobey the limit.

I like to keep near the limit, but I am not a stickler for it if I am behind a truck or someone annoying. i get better gas mileage and less stressed going at a moderate pace.

Sorry... I didn't mean to bash the US. You are right: I've only been to the North Eastern part. Maybe people elsewhere drive differently. I don't know how it is there, but in Canada if you drive on the right lane there is no problem whatsoever if you drive at least at 50 MPH.

the 55mph speed limits were imposed in 1974 in response to the Arab oil embargo of the early 70s to reduce our reliance on imported oil.

It was observed that the fatality rate went down concurrently. Cars were getting safer around that time so it's hard to isolate the cause. In any case the limits remained until 1995.

Cars today are vastly more safe than the ones built in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I welcome the return to 70-75mph speed limits.

We're still not back to the speed limits common before 1974. Typically crowded freeways were 65mph pre-1974 while today they're still 55mph. Unless I'm dreaming it some interstates were 85mph speed limits (any other old farts remember?). Those speed limits were madness especially given the survivability of car wrecks back then.

I think there should be several speed limits on a same highway.

The left lane should be the fastest lane. Anything under 70 MPH should be illegal.

But... The right lane should be the slow lane: Anything OVER 60 MPH should be illegal.

OR... maybe we just need to live and let others live! I don't care if people go at 80 MPH, but I choose to go at 55 MPH maximum and I can go 650-700 km. on a tank!

If Germany can do no speed limits, it says quite a bit that even 85 is bad here, especially given there are some super remote/light traffic highways out there. Not that any of this is going to be benefit a stock Fit very much - its just no bahn stormer of a car.
