Thoughts and questions from a 2 month long owner and HONDA GUY

Ok so I have had my 12' Sport MT for about 8 weeks now…

I wanted to share some thoughts and ask some questions from the board….

Does anyone else hate the 1-2 gear shift, and I am referring chiefly to the issue of "rev hang".. Where you press the clutch in and the rev's stay, artificially, for a second before dropping, I have heard it discussed before as a way for new drivers blah blah blah save the clutch, has anyone reading this removed this feature? thoughts about how it affected the driveability? I would like to remove this feature has any one done an DIY?

Re: search and any PO-tential flamers, I tried to do a search but came back empty, I'm just going to the search at the top of every page.. and not finding any results..

I know what you're talking about, that feature is probably programmed into the ECU and can't be disabled. Now in the old days, my 1976 BMW 2002 had a dashpot that slowed the closing of the carburetor when you lifted off the gas. Annoying too, but easily removable with a screwdriver

There was a reflash available from Honda for the FA5 and FG2 Civic Si to remove the rev hang on those cars. Who knows, maybe ask your dealer?

Good luck finding a fix. Unless you find some Honda programing guru, i doubt they,ll be a fix. After a while, i just forgot about it. Both of my Dad's pt cruisers did this, and i learned how to drive on them.

Yup, an MT of course, that's all I've ever driven. I just can't believe how hard it was to get one. My dealer only had 2 scheduled to come in this year. My rims are black steelies now that I have my snow tires on.

OP, Search for "clutch delay valve" on the forum. you'll find that a lot of the delay in the clutch engaging is due to the CDV and others have replaced it with an older year honda part.

Another option, if you wanted to go that way, would be a light-weight flywheel. I had an 03 Civic Si that had a similar rev hang. I replaced the clutch and used a light flywheel (half the weight of the factory) and that changed it completely. The heavy mass of the factory flywheel creates momentum and has the effect of making the engine hang onto the revs. It does make it a smoother ride, having a heavier flywheel, but bit everyone wants the same thing. Not everybody wants to change the flywheel right away, either, though, haha. If you do do that route then you will see a major difference in rev hang and shift characteristics in general.

No Honda won't. There are aftermarket flashes for the ECU on other cars that will. Nothing for Fits.

The best explanation I've heard for the rev-hang is emissions. Closing the throttle quickly starves the engine of air needed to completely burn the fuel already in the manifold. It's an ultra low emissions design.

It's not noticeable on the automatic but I agree, on the MT it's annoying. I think all cars today have this (perhaps not with direct injection where fuel can be shut off right at the cylinders).

The other thing is the clutch delay valve (CDV). I'm not sure what that's about. Maybe it's there with rev hang to get better MPG.

From what I know you're not going to fix this problem without going into the ecu. It's for emissions. My last car, another late model import, did it too. Older cars might appear to have this rev hang, but as mentioned, it was probably due to the mass of the flywheel. The CDV will only effect the engagement of the clutch.

An ETC (electronic throttle controlle) will make you forget all about that hang.
