Buying a Fit that has been towed behind RV?

Awesome forum. TY

We're about to buy a 2010 Sport. It looks like the previous owner towed it behind an RV or something. The odometer reads 32K but I suspect bearings and suspension have more miles.

Is this something we should worry about? Use as a way to lower price? (15,995 at the moment).

Any comments would be appreciated. We have obsessed over the car for a few days now. Wow. Impressed.

I wouldn't worry too much about the towing, assuming there's no evidence of damage to the car (the transmission shifts properly and doesn't make strange sounds, etc.). The odometer reading does not reflect miles traveled while being towed, but these would not be harsh miles generally speaking—the car is not heavily laden, and probably traveling over fairly smooth roads at reasonable speeds, and of course the engine and brakes and such are not being used up at all. Do make sure the tires are in good condition or base your offer accordingly.

I doubt there's any bearing trouble yet; wheel bearings generally last quite a long (but somewhat variable) time, and there's no particular maintenance for them other than checking that they're still OK (they're sealed, permanently lubricated bearings).

Have you priced new Fits recently? $16K seems absurdly expensive to me for a three-year-old used car when the current new ones have an MSRP of about $17K (sport MT) or $18K (sport AT) or $19.7K (sport AT+nav).

You can likely get a 5MT leftover 2012 for about 16-17 at a dealership. Even a '13 should run you no more than 18k or so.

There's conversions done to the trans (and maybe engine) to allow it to roll undamaged, but I would pass on it. The mounting points are usually cut into the bumper cover which makes it ugly.

WRONG. There are NO conversions to either auto nor manual trans and none to engine to tow a Fit behind a motorhome.

Yes the bumper cover lower opening into the ac condensor will have some cuts made. Check the windshield and headlight housings for any "sand blasting" from being towed.

Are you going to tow it? Costs to setup for towing is 700 minimum to 4000.
If you don't want a tow car, check bb value for year and model.
I would and did opt for a new one, ended up with a used one(4 days old) but got a 4 yr warranty as Honda sells used cars as certified. Out the door price not too much more than used one you found.

Rod Here - Changed my alias as I did not want everything going onto facebook - ANYWAY

It has a special coating on the front for sandblasting which makes me feel they took good care of it. Also have the clean Car Facts. No we're not towing. Not that ugly actually. Looks sort of cool I thought!

15K range is just on the edge of our financial box so saying we can get a better one for 16 or 17K is not financially smart for us at this time. Dealer price of $15,900 is lower then most used 10' Sports.

BB has the care at just over $16K

There are very very few Fit Sports in the Madison WI Area. It's not like we have dozens to choose from. There is one cheaper but neither of us can stand that copper color.

I'm thinking dealership got the trade in from some snowbirds and they paid $14,500??

i suggest you get a different car. you're buying a used car at the limit of your what your finance allows. what are you going to do if your car has issues? can you pay for them?

check out cheap leases on a nissan hatch... in your case you want factory warranty.

Don't try to outguess what he paid, dealer only wanted to give me 500 for our trade in, book value wholesale was 1500.

Is it a Honda dealer? They give a good warranty on used if it is certified.

Average auto driver puts on 12 to 14000 per year, MH only 6 to 8. so it probably wasn't towed more than 10000, add miles and subtract $ to the BB.

LOL - we both have Credit scores over 800, I'm pretty sure we have our finances figured out. We were approved for a $40K loan, not that we want to spend that money. With only a mortgage and no other loans we can pretty much pay cash but don't want to go over 16K for a car.

I would never ever lease - just not a smart thing to do with your money.

What are the interest rates on new vs used car? Nevermind, if you are paying cash.
Honda had some pretty sweet interest rates. .9% & 1.9% awhile ago--might be worth going new.

So you'd rather buy a used car with no warranty than pay $1500 more for a brand new car?

If you can't find anything in Madison go to Milwaukee or the Fox Valley. Both have plenty of Fits and neither are all that far.

when i bought my fit two months ago, the special financing deals did not apply to the Fits. I ended up with 3%~ interest rather than the 0.9% if i went with all the other models. I really wanted the Fit so 3% was still much better than the crap interest they gave me when i was 21 yrs old... 7%.

2year old Fit,

I don't think you are actually saving that much money over buying a new fit.
Due to particularities with the economy and car buying; I think the recommendation is you really should should buy new over a couple years used, at this specific time. (this is not a general recommendation).
So...if you have any doubt, I'd say "pass".

Read this article which also worked with Consumer Reports:
Why used-car prices are rising so much - SFGate
You can actually be "under water" with a used car.

http://news.consumerreports.org/cars...-used-car.html

For the 2 cheaper car, the cost differential between the cheaper 2 cars of 2012 and 2010 was about ~$2000. so you have to evaluate whether all that wear and tear is worth $2000 to you.
Sure this may blow your budget, but once you start adding up the 2years of depreciation, that $2000 gets eaten up pretty quickly. Consider that new tires alone will cost you $600, then new is suddenly in the game. Not to mention the other much more expensive maintenance that is 32k closer.

Well, MRSP for a "like" F2013 Fit Sport is 22,000, I don't know how you guys come up with 1500 more.

We still get 2 years warranty and oil changes.

Interest is 2.79%

I don't know where you get your tires but they are $400 at the place we go to, checked that out already.

Msrp is $18,700 for an AT Fit Sport. TTL will bring that up, but still MSRP is well defined.

In what world is a Fit $22,000? That's more than $4k more than what a '12 Sport goes for.

Well if you've pulled the trigger, then well done. No more second guessing (it will only bring doubt) and be happy with what you got.

But I think some good advice was given in the above replies, if you were still in consideration.
