I think you're referring to adjusting valve-lash, as opening up and inspecting valve-lash wouldn't be cost effective without making adjustments however small.

Hondas have solid lifters, as such some noise is to be expected, especially when the engine is cold and the parts have contracted some, leaving extra space.

If the valves are too noisy, then it's time to have them adjusted.

How often this happens is pretty subjective, but if the car is running poorly (stalls, misfires) valve adjustment may be needed.

It used to be Honda recommended doing this every 30K miles, but that's a bit excessive. I think 100K along with the spark plugs is a good milestone. Sooner if you're having problems.

why can't I get the theme from "Rawhide" out of my head now?

That said, I would expect that the car companies do some sort of engineering studies with statistical analysis to get an idea of how long parts and fluids last under normal service. Honda doesn't want to be replacing any transmissions while they're still under warranty nor getting a reputation for producing cars whose transmissions fail at 60,000 or 90,000 miles.

Whereas a mechanic may see a few damaged transmissions here and there and may attribute it to not changing fluid as often as he believes it should be changed. (and I'm sure people lie to their mechanics about maintenance about as much as they lie to their dentists about flossing)

Sometimes conventional wisdom is just wrong. Until a few years ago it was "well-known" that excess stomach acid caused ulcers until one wacky doctor proved it wasn't that, it was a particular bacteria.

So I pose this question- show me the evidence that Honda is wrong and information handed down from generation to generation is right. Because my dealer is still telling me to change my oil way more often than the car tells me.

I work at Toyota and while the ATF WS is designed to be "lifetime" the shift quality and fluid condition deteriates rather around 45-50k mark. We often do drain and fill for customers every 30k to keep fluids fresh. Usually the drain and fill only takes up 3-4 qts on a typical car. My 03 4runner takes the older T-IV fluid but i have a habit of doing a drain and fill every 10K miles to keep my trans happy. Its a heavy duty (4.7L V8 model)

If its anything like motorcycle lash adjustments, if they make noise they are ok. You have to worry when they get quiet as that means the lash has tighten beyond factory clearance. Contrary to what people believe the lash clearance gets tighter as the valve and valve seats wear, this is because the valve sits higher when it wears thus closing the gap between lifter and cam profile. This will in turn end up with burnt valves and power loss if you let it go too long in this state of tune because it will "preload" the valves causing intake/exhaust gases to leak.
