"The light comes on when you open the tailgate."

This is the only information I can find in the owners manual concerning the cargo area light.

Is there any method of disabling this light? Can an owner remove the light bulb? If so, how is this done?

If the on whenever the hatch is open feature bothers you, the best solution is to swap the plastic lens for one with a switch. There's a DIY on the forum with the part number you need to order to swap it out.

 

If you're worried about it staying on and draining the battery while you have the hatch open I believe it turns itself off after 5 minutes or so, at least I think mine does.

Carefully use a flat blade screwdriver to pop the lighting unit out. Then you could make a decision on how to disable it. You could either take the bulb out, or disconnect the wire.

 

You may want to replace the cargo light with a switched version. It is from Acura part #34265-SFE-003. There is also a thread on here about this, just search "cargo light upgrade". I replaced the cargo light on my 09 Fit and it is totally plug & play.
