Correct USB Drive Format?

The Fit manual lists the file types that will play from a USB flash drive, but is not forthcoming (to my eyes) as to the format of the drive itself.

(I'm working from a Mac) I've tried FAT 32, and Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but I only see "Unsupported" flashing on the audio system display. Does anyone know the magic combination?

Thanks,

Robert_B

I just pulled mine out to be sure. It's FAT32 (16GB). My guess is it doesn't like the files "Unsupported" indicates a version of MP#, WMA or AAC that's not compatible where "Unplayable" indicates DRM preventing it from playing.

I use one formatted on a Mac as FAT32 with no difficulties. My drive is a PNY Attache 16GB (it's what was largish and on sale at the time).

Does it say "Unsupported" when it tries to play files, or does it say unsupported right at the start when it tries to read the drive? If it's the latter, maybe the drive itself isn't compatible with the head unit for some reason.

If it's complaining when trying to play a file, that probably means the file is not in an appropriate file format. Apple Lossless files, for example, are not supported, even though iTunes gives them the same file extension as AAC files. (They're both .m4a, which is reasonable enough as they're both audio data in an MPEG-4 container, albeit encoded with different audio codecs.)

Thanks, all, for the info and suggestions; I am up and running now.

I had formatted it as Fat32 originally, but added a partition map option that wasn't compatible. When I returned to the defaults, it worked as expected.

8GB of mp3s is a lot of listening time!

My first drive worked great until I decided to clean the drive out of garbage (was mixed files) and re format FAT32 with just music. stopped working.

I bought a sandisk minidrive that has worked flawlessly.

Bottomline, if it works, dont touch format. if it says unsupported, attempt to format it a few times. I reformatted my 32gb drive dozens of times in effort to make it work. the mini 8gb worked out of box

I did find some audio files that dont work. they simply show up as unsupported when going to them. it does NOT render entire drive unusable

I have a 2009 Honda Fit Sport and I ran into the same issue as others posted here ("Unsupported" error). Luckily I was able to resolve the issue as outlined below. Hopefully this helps someone else.

I bought a new Samsung BAR Plus 64GB flash drive that I wanted to use. It has a USB 3.1 interface but is listed as backwards compatible with USB 2.0. I bought it because it has good temperature tolerance (-13 to 185° F or -25 to 85°C), perfect for the car. When I plugged it in and got the "Unsupported" error I initially thought it was because it didn't have USB 1.1 support.

To verify for sure, I compared it to an older Sandisk drive (which worked fine in the car) by connecting both to my computer and comparing the format settings. As other mentioned, formatting the drive was key, but I also had to configure the following options on my new Samsung drive:
  1. Formatted the drive using a FAT32 partition
  2. Set partition status to Inactive (screenshot below shows menu of a currently Inactive partition, hence why is says "set active")
  3. Set the PartitionTypeID to 0x0c - FAT32 LBA (aka 0xc) from the default 0x07 - NTFS (aka 0x7).
Screenshot from free Minitools Partition Wizard. Not sure if this available on Mac, but perhaps you can do the same on Mac with the command line.

Thank you for the tips - I figured out how to get my 2019 Fit LX to play all 124 GB of music on my SanDisk 128 GB USB flash drive. My USB stick info: SanDisk small format FAT32 formatted drive with 21796 mp3 file structure songs in 673 total folders (main and sub folders) using the iTunes folder structure of music group | album | CD number | song folder structure. I started with 21796 songs and 2400+ total folders - Fit would only play the groups of A-I and would occasionally show a folder number over 700. I spent "quality time" over the Thanksgiving break reorganizing those folders to be music group | song folder structure with a few folders of my favorite groups still in the group | album | CD number | song folder structure. Now all folders and songs (128 to 320 bit rate up to 48000 frequency range) seem to play even though I have more songs than people have claimed will work. Enjoy!
