What's this compartment under the hood?

Just above the engine and below the windshield there's a compartment with a sliding door. What is it for?

I opened it part way, took a photo and circled it in red:

It says Frame Number but there's nothing behind it except an access to something else. But thanks so much for your help.

I think it might just be the frame number. The only other thing back there at that spot would be a bolt to take off the metal cowling... but you'd need the entire plastic assembly off to take off the cowling.

a rather inconvenient place for your stash? I always thought you could view the frame (body) serial number through there.

take a peek inside and you will see etched numbers on the frame, which is of course what the cover says... frame number

take that cover off and you will have an engine bay heat exhaust... well kinda

Vin HAS to be visible without removing any parts. So this is just a way to get around having to take the cowl plastic off to see the vin.
