I've had my 2012 Fit for about 10 months. It only has 5400 miles on it and the oil viscosity reads 50%. I'm getting antsy about getting the oil changed. Should I wait until the maintenance symbol lights up? Can it really go 10000 miles before its first oil change?

It's a maintenance minder, it doesn't measure viscosity. The car can go a lot of miles between oil changes depending upon how you drive.

But they also say change it at least yearly regardless...

 

MIne did. 63,000 miles on it now with absolutely no problems. I change mine at 20%, because at 15% the car will start to nag me, and I find that annoying.

 

Yes this is true, I forgot about that. Change yearly if you don't do much driving. 1 year or when the MM tells you to.
