Opinions! Civic or Fit
Now, I know this is a Fit forum, but we're all Honda lovers, so I pose to you this question about the Fit's "cousin" (per say).
I'm in the market for a new car. I've tried other car brands (VW, Toyota, and Ford), but I ultimately came back to Honda. Mainly because my current and first car is a Honda. But enough talk. THE QUESTION!
I looooove the Fit. I test drove it today, and it was a "zippy" little car. I loved the way it handled. I plan on making major modifications to it, too. FYI. New tires, new rims, getting it lowered, etc.
But, the dilemma is the Civic, too. I had test drove it a few weeks back and it just felt so bada** in it. It was the EX-L with navigation. I do also plan on making modifications to it, if I do get it.
If it were YOU, what would you choose? It terms of driving fun, MPG's, etc.
may the force be with you.

I would say to go with the Fit. There are lots of Civics out there. Plus the functionality of the Fit...I love the odd looks I got when I put a tall cat tree in my Fit...along with my mother and her newly adopted cat. ;-)
Ultimately do what is in your heart.

HA! If only price weren't an option.
Even then, I'd get the Accord EX-L Coupe. Pretty damn sexy.
I think I'm gonna get the Fit. I wanna drive it again before I make my final decision. I'm thinking... midnight plum pearl.
decisions, decisions.

I looked at both, before buying a Fit Base. I like to be able to carry stuff. It looked like I wouldn't be able to get a 24" square box in the Civic trunk.
Then I saw how the Fits seats folded down. Case closed!

I came from a CRV to the Fit. I chose the Fit mainly for the MPG. I was leasing the CRV and I put at least 100 miles for my work. On my third day with the Fit, I was getting 38MPG and i average 32MPG to 35MPG. I love the Fit because I can fit all my tools and all my parts for my clients. My boss drives a Civic and he averages at 32MPG with the Eco on. But then again his trunk is full of tools and parts.
I was faced with the same decision. Bought the Fit. More fun to drive, IMO, and saved a couple grand. I got a manual though. If forced to buy an automatic, I would probably swing back to the Civic. The auto Fit seemed pretty lethargic.
If you want a FASTER better over all car, then Civic,
if you want a SLOWER but BETTER LOOKING car, then Fit.
The current Civic despite the improvement from the latest face lift still doesn't look good to me.
In fact, if you put the previous generation civic side by side with the current generation civic, you could easily think that the past generation is the newer model, especially if you look from behind.
In some other model / brand, sometimes the newer model looks ugly when they first came out but after a while,
the looks start growing on you and you eventually like it better than the previous generation,
but in current generation civic case,
that had not and would not happen for me...
The same as the current generation CR-V rear styling which to me look's like HUNCH BACK of NOTRE DAME....
again,
if you want better overall car without taking looks as consideration then
the Civic is a better car than the Fit.
but from styling point of view,
I think the Fit is a much better looking car then the Civic,
(of course after you replace the USDM Fit tail light with other tail light like Depo, Axis, Stella, or JDM style tail light)
I really hate the USDM tail light on our Honda Fit, in fact that is the first modification I did to my Honda Fit and that also cause me unable to stop doing more and more modification to my car, because I really fall in love with my Honda Fit after replacing the USDM tail light with JDM LED tail light.
(believe it or not, but in the beginning, I bought my Honda Fit strictly for practical transportation purposes and did not have any plan to do modification at all !)

^ yeah, same thing happened to me lol! I love my fit even more than when i first got it.
i love being able to dart around and fit between small spaces where all the oversized generic suvs/trucks get stuck behind.

Depends on your needs. I needed a hatchback, good mpg and wanted a manual and something fun to drive. I looked at the VW GTI and Ford Focus ST but felt maintenance would be too costly along with recommended premium fuel. There are other hatchbacks but they seem to lack in cargo room compare to the Fit. I would of consider the civic except its not offer in a hatch and the looks do not appeal to me nor the 2 tier dash.
But it is such a personal choice in buying a car you have to decide which car you would be happy in the long run.

I just sold my 1998 Civic HX coupe and got a 2010 Fit Sport AT. Love the space in this hatchback. You're right, a 24" cube box would not fit in the Civic trunk. Also picked up about 18" of precious space in the garage with the Fit!
Really, if you are gonna get an A/T, I might suggest the Civiv for the added HP. I find myself yearning for just a little more HP (gimme 130 hp and I'll be happy) but I get by with the fantastic manual tranny. The engine just sings at over 3k rpm, pure music to my ears!
I'd really recommend trying to learn manual, you might never go back! If driving is just to go from a to b and is a chore, then go AT but you seem enthusiastic about cars and driving so if you really enjoy driving and feeling "one" with your car, I'd say go manual. You could even take a driving lesson. In one lesson you can get the basic skills and in two weeks of driving it'll be second nature!
GO 'NOLES! I'm a FSU alum

If you want options the Civic wins hands down. I only wish my 09 civic had the options the new one has. But if you need to move things... lots of room... The fit is it. Personally the Civic has a better driving position for me. I am over 6' and the drivers seat in the fit doesnt go far enough back and is too high for me. The mods the OP mentions I wouldnt call major but will pribably cost the same on both cars.
i got a FIT over a Civic SI... reason being, steering feel. the FIT felt more natural, where the Civic felt artificial. engine-wise, its obvious. the new Accord is quite nice, though. if i had to choose, it'd be between the FIT or Accord.
