Question New to the Fit! Questions?

Just last week I purchased a 2009 Honda Fit, AT Sport without navigation and 36,000 miles, in blackberry color. I am loving it so far. I just have a few questions:

The AVG mpg gauge is showing 36.1 while when I calculate by hand I'm getting 31.5. I'm assuming I need an update of sorts to fix this? I don't expect the numbers to be 100% on, but I feel like this could be a computer error to be resolved. This was just on my first tank of gas, though. I didn't perform the first fill up, I was just going off my trip computer and the 10.6 tank size, because I assume the dealer stopped the pump at the first click off. I'll be able to calculate better on my second tank.

I'm used to changing my oil at 3000 miles. According to the Honda dealer sticker in my car, I'm due in at 41,000 miles. Higher than I'm accustomed to. Should I go by that, or by the oil-life indicator? I've read some people going 75000-10000 before a change. But it seems my local Honda suggests 5000?

Also, I have plugged my iPhone 4 running on iOS 5.1.1 into the USB port and nothing happens. How long should it take for my Fit to sync? I do have a LOT of music on my phone. Or is there something I'm missing here? I do have an AUX cable in the car too, I was just curious. It would be nice to just use the USB to charge and play my phone.

Thanks in advance!

for your AVG mpg make sure you reset the trip on your next fill up and you should get a more accurate reading from your driving.

Just follow the maintenance minder for oil changes/any other maintenance needed.

not too sure about the iphone i took my stock HU out pretty quickly

I did reset my trip also before I started driving it. I plan to do so with each tank.

There was an update on the software for the 09s for the MPG meter, not sure if it's been performed on yours or not. Most people on here have found the MPG meter to be within 1-2 mpg of actual if you drive normally. It doesn't take into account some hypermiling techniques why is why I say "normally".

Yes follow the maintainance minder for your oil changes, some people see up to 10k mile intervals, the computer decides oil life depending on how you drive and other factors. Oil samples sent to Blackstone while following the minder have shown it to be accurate or conservative in it's intervals.

IDK about the USB, I don't have one.

I'm betting your Fit didn't have the TSB update for the MPG display. I'd have the dealer check it and to see if there are any other outstanding recalls or TSBs you should have performed. After the software update, my mileage display is at most 1 mpg off.

As for the oil change, my dealer also recommends 5,000, but I'll go over 6K. I don't go any longer only because I don't drive all that much. Definitely not 3K.

We went from iPhone 3 to 5 and neither have any problems connecting immediately. It's far better than our new Subaru. Have you checked the cord?

Thanks Wanderer and doctorz.

I will definitely be back to my dealer Friday for them to check. I doubt it has been updated. As for the oil change, I guess I'll just keep an eye on the oil-life percentage.

My cord I use is an apple brand cord and works fine. My phone connects and when I go to my music app, it shows it's connected to a device. I have 3000 songs on my phone, so I was wondering if that was why I'm seeing no results, because it takes a while to process that much info.

Anyone else with a lot of music, how long did it take for your phone to play?

have you toggled between the aux input and the usb? Try a 2 or 4gb flash drive with a few mp3 songs on it to make sure the usb port works. I had a few hundred songs and it registered immediately. it shouldn't take all that long to register. you may also want to perform a rest of your phone (not a wipe) as sometimes ipods (and possibly iphones) don't connect properly. There are a few threads on here about it.

That said, the ipod navigation for the FIT is HORRENDOUS and is a great reason to upgrade the stereo as one of the first things you do. With only a few hundred songs (maybe 75 or 100 artists) it took for ever to get to the end of the alphabet.

Congrats on the purchase.

1) From what I've read on the fourms, the '09 Fit models had a faulty MPG gauge/avg. Just take it to the dealer and they should update it for you.

2) I was the same way. I used to change my oil in my previous cars every 3.5k miles. But with the Fit I asked the dealer when I first got it when I should change the oil. I asked if I should go buy the oil life gauge or the regular 3-4k miles. They said I should change it when the percentage gauge gets to 15%, and that it's perfectly okay to drive that many miles on this type of oil. I'm at about 5k miles since my last oil change and I'm at 60% life I think.

3) Dunno what's up with the iphone syncing. Mine syncs right away.

1) As others have suggested, have the car's firmware checked to make sure it's current.

2) I change my oil once a year. The saw that the newer models come with 0W-20 oil and that's what I put in mine. I do about 12,000 miles or a little more per year. Seven months of the year are winter weather but I do park overnight in a heated garage. Don't sweat the oil change frequency.

3) Have you tried rebooting the phone to make sure it's not in a funky state? And note that the stereo has to be on Aux mode. There are two inputs for Aux that are toggled by pressing the Aux input button repeatedly.

oh and I go by the maintenance minder for oil changes. Average has been between 9K & 11K miles. I chose to go with synthetic Mobil 1 since it's an extra $10 every 10 K miles... In general, Honda (and most manufacturers these days) tolerances in engine manufacturing are so high, and the oil technology has changed plenty since the years of "Grandpa's 3k oil changes" that 10K should be common on most vehicles. in 50 years we've come so far with technology, medicine, etc... but we couldn't get engine oil to perform past 3k? That's marketing and propaganda trying to keep people scared so they do oil changes more often. Many on here have had oil analysis done by blackstone labs after 10K+ and I've never seen a report that says you should have changed it sooner. All have said you could have run it for another 2-4K miles.

If you're just dividing your mileage by the 10.6 gallon tank size, and not what you are actually putting in the tank, that's probably the issue.

If the MPG-calculator update has not yet been done, expect about a 10% drop in your MPG display after you get the update. That should put it real close to your actual mileage.

As far as the oil change goes, the owner's manual says to do it when the Maintenance Minder tells you to, or once a year, whichever comes first. Our 2009 now has just over 37000 miles, and so far both vehicles have been on the once-a-year plan.

Yes, you can get it done more often if you wish, but you're just lining the pockets of the oil companies, and the dealer or service shop that does the work.

I follow the maintenance minder as well. Just make sure you reset it when you change it (if you do it yourself). Someone made too much money putting that maintenance minder system in place for you to not crutch on it .

Thanks all! I had to restart my phone and now it works. That was pretty simple. I'm a playlist maker anyway, so the controls on the fit aren't half bad.

I called my local Honda to see if to fix my MPG would be under my warranty. They didn't answer my question really. So maybe you all will know... My car is certified preowned and under warranty. I can't remember the specifics of it, but I assume this should be covered?

And the guy I spoke to told me that the update did not apply to all fits, and would need to do a VIN check. But I think I read on another forum before that this is a lie... That it applies to all 2009 models. And that TSB updates usually don't appear when the VIN is run. Am I right? Lol
