2013 5th gear rattle

Hi all,

I made a post about this a few months ago. Wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing anything similar as I fight with Honda. When I shift into 5th, I experience a loud rattle between 55-65 MPH. As I have continued to drive the car it has gotten louder, more constant and unbearable during long drives.

I have been fighting with Honda for a few months about this and their most recent conclusion is calling it a characteristic of the car and telling me to go pound sand (even though I have paperwork from the dealer saying they were unable to replicated in other Fits). I will be going back to the dealer to fight some more next week.

I just wanted to know if any other 2013 fit sport owners were experiencing anything like this, and if so what your solutions were.

is it consistent with 5th gear? or is it consistent with those speeds at 4th or 5th gear?

5th only. It has never happened in 4th.

Mine rattles a bit under acceleration in both 4th and 5th. It is gone during constant speed. It is more noticable under more load.

I advice you to pop your own hood and reach back and see if you can move your heatshield.

I dont know what causes my noise, but the engine still runs fine and Im gonna leave it. I got until 6 years pass or 100k miles so I have quite a ways to go lol

I will check it out. I had thought that issue was only with the first gen fits though?

Also, I forgot to mention if I press my shifter to the right when in 5th the rattle will stop. But as soon as I let go and it falls back into its standard position it picks back up.

Heat shields can come loose on pretty much any car, though of course the design of the shield and its mounting affects how likely that is to happen.

However, the fact that putting a little pressure on your shifter makes the noise stop rather indicates that it's not a heat shield, but something else rattling, apparently something in the shift linkage. There could be a bunch of causes, ranging from basically harmless (though annoying) to things you definitely want fixed lest you wear out transmission parts early.

For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any such rattle in my 2012 Base Fit (which has the same transmission and such as yours), and I've put a good many highway miles on it. It's not like it's a whisper quiet car, of course, but there's no distinct rattle in certain gears or anything. It's not "characteristic of the car."

Thank you for the feedback. I will be speaking with the dealership on Monday. I am not sure what will come next, but I have a feeling they will not be budging from their excuse that it is a characteristic of the car.
