Question about the cargo cover...
Question about the cargo cover...
I am currently on my second Fit. The first one was a 2011 orange sport model. We traded it in for a dark grey 2013 sport model because I was able to get a lower monthly payment on the newer one (go figure!).
One debate my husband and I had when we first got my orange one, and we have discussed again, is the cargo cover. I saw a thread a little further down the page where someone was very happy with their cargo cover. I really want one, mainly for the same reasons that others have said... I don't like the rest of the world being able to see whether or not I have anything in my trunk/hatchback area, and I agree that the cover would sort of "clean up" the look of the back of the car's interior. My husband doesn't want the cover because it would have to be removed if we are hauling a larger item. We don't haul much of anything in my car very often, but I understand his point about wanting the convenience of just being able to load up the car and go as needed.
I did notice that the older Fit models (I think 2007 and earlier?) had a cargo cover that was retractable. Does anyone know why those wouldn't work on the newer models? I'm assuming it's just a difference in the size of the cargo area, but thought maybe someone here would know more about this. I would love to find an alternative to the cover that has to be removed when more space is needed... although honestly, I may end up talking him into getting me the standard cargo cover eventually anyway
Thanks in advance

It takes 5 seconds to remove the cover. I have only removed it twice to put in something big. Now hauling alot of stuff is a premeditated move. Its not something whimsical. Its not like u suddenly buy a couch or something.
Thanks
I understand that I won't be "suddenly buying a couch," but there are times, maybe about once a month or so, when we do end up putting more in the car than we had originally planned.
For example, a few weeks ago we went to Costo with my mother-in-law, who ended up buying two carts worth of stuff, including several bulky items... in the mix were larger things like a tall poinsettia, a few toys for her new grandbaby, and several packs of protein shakes, in addition to regular grocery items... we got everything in, but if I had a picture, you'd see what I'm talking about. There were so many items in those two carts that I was afraid it wouldn't all go, but we barely made it work... thank goodness we took my car that day! With that cover, it wouldn't have worked out, and we weren't planning to have that much stuff to bring home when we left that morning. I didn't realize just how carried away she can get at Costco... lol!
Having said that... so removing it isn't a big deal? Now that I have had that experience once with her, I guess we could always remove the cover that morning if needed for future trips. I guess my husband just likes the idea that, if he needs the space, he has it, and having to plan to remove the cover might somehow infringe on that convenience... at least in his mind.
Thanks again!
The cover is easily removed. It is made of fiberglass or some sort of composite material and is quite durable and easy to handle. So if you have an un-planned situation where the cover would be in the way. You can remove it when loading your cargo, and then temporarily stow it on top of the cargo or beside, wherever there may be a little extra room.
As far as a retractable cover, they don't make one for 2009+, so you will need to plan for the solid hinged panel.
One other piece of information, the earlier covers around 2009 -2011 I think, had a fabric privacy flap attached to cover the gap behind the rear seats when not in their reclined position. These models have snaps that held the flaps in place. So if you end up with one of these, say from the used market, you will also need to deal with the snaps. Not a big deal, but just be aware. You can also permanently remove the flap and use the cover in the same mode as the newer versions.

That makes me feel a little better about it... thanks!
Oh, and I didn't know that about the used ones. I'll keep that in mind

I didn't want to drill into the back of my seats so I actually just removed the flap by undoing the clips and have the rear seats fully reclined to compensate for the gap
Oh, the gap lol... I've seen a lot of other discussions about that gap. Isn't that gap just supposed to allow for room in case your passengers want the rear seats reclined? Seems like there has been some debate about that on other threads.
That's correct. Once you lean the rear seats back, the gap is virtually gone. I always keep my rear seats reclined.
Yeah, I think I would have to do that as well, if I get that cover... the gap would annoy me lol.
BTW, I just noticed you're in GA and that your Fit is orange. My 2011 was orange, thanks to my husband picking the color and car shopping for me while I was at work one day, lol! By the time I knew what color he liked, he already had three dealers fighting over our sale. It was crazy. It's a beautiful color, but I'm not gonna lie... I love my newer, dark grey one

Thanks!
I loved my old one, but when I found out I could get lower payments, a newer model with no miles on it, and skip a payment PLUS not have to worry about making my ad valorem tax payment (which would have been due yesterday, since my birthday is Christmas Day... and this is a big deal because I'm between full-time jobs right now), I couldn't resist. My husband was a bit disappointed when he realized the 2013 didn't come in orange though lol
Mind the Gap
As stated above, reclining the rear seat pretty much solves this, BUT I've found if very useful when I put a blanket or comforter over the rear seats when my dogs are tagging along. This way you can tuck a blanket into that gap so fur cleanup is minimized.
I love my cargo cover for my 2012 Fit Sport. It was really easy to install, and it's easy to take off. I just keep the rear seats reclined all the way-my back seat passengers enjoy the ride more and there's no gap between the seats and the cargo cover.
I would not worry about the small amount of effort it takes to remove or attach the cover. It's easy peasy and just takes a second.

Oh, good point! I don't have a dog (unfortunately), but I do like to take part in runs, like the Color Run and Tough Mudder, and usually a group of us will go together to these things, so I have to cover all of my seats... so it's good to know that the cargo cover might be helpful in securing whatever I am using to protect my seats. Talk about a double purpose
Thanks!

That seems to be the general consensus around here... thanks for the input
Yep... I love Amazon! They usually do have a slightly better deal on most things. I'll be sure to check with them. Thanks!
