In Dash Navigation Thoughts
In Dash Navigation Thoughts
Does Putting In Non-OEM unit affect warranty? How difficult is it to install one of these yourself?
I'm thinking of this unit. $200 for in-dash navigation seems hard to beat.
Thoughts?

That unit has too high percentage of negative reviews. They should be about 80% favorable and 10% who will never be happy with any product, probably because they can't read instructions, and 10% who voice legitimate complaints.
Here's one that's well written:
I'm afraid the adage, "You get what you pay for," is most often true. I don't think you'll find reliable navigation AND decent sound (at least as good as OEM) at this price. Go for a known respected brand. Yeah you pay for brand-names but there's a reason for that.
Check crutchfield. They walk you through the steps, have complete instructions, wiring harnesses, dash kits. Their prices are a bit high, maybe shop around a bit after figuring out what you want.

Pros: Good bright screen, nice touch interface, works well with steering wheel controls, Nice user interface, Radio, DVD, CD, USB Functions nicely.
Cons: Navigation system worst I have ever used! It responds very slowly, the maps are very plain, the TTS voice is awful and most importantly, it would not route to one destination that I entered properly. The routing makes many mistakes.
Also, the built-in Bluetooth microphone is awful, not one person could hear me, even with the vehicle parked and not running.
And finally, the date / time will not stay set, it changes 12 hours forward every time the system is turned on.
In summary: Although this system is in-expensive and has some nice features, the poor navigation system and the resetting clock do not make it even worth the low price. I am returning the unit I bought to Amazon.
I would not recommend this system to anyone.

How difficult you find the installation depends a lot on your experience and knack for such things. It's not inherently a tough job (though parts of it can be tedious and fiddly), but it could be rather daunting if you aren't comfortable with basic electrical work. Places that offer wiring harnesses and directions and such (like Crutchfield, though of course they aren't the only ones) can help make that part of things a lot simpler than trying to wire stuff up yourself.
I just use my current smartphone (currently have an iPhone 4s) for navigation. It's always with me and always up-to-date. There are a number cheap / free nav apps if you don't like what's standard on the phone. I also have to learn only 1 navigation app as long as I own the phone.

I have a pioneer 4400, which is now last years model (newest out when I bought it) and it's great. No nav, but you can buy the pioneer nav brain and connect it, or like everyone else, connect your phone GPS and it plays the commands thru the stereo. Since it's last years model, I bet you can get it for about $300. And it's WAY better than BOSS.
Crutchfield doesn't have the 4400 anymore but they do have the 4500. The distribution of reviews is pretty normal for a good product, and crutchfield even addresses reviewer's iphone5 issues in the overview.
yah, i run a 2500BT with my droid4.... google nav works flawlessly over BT while streaming pandora. i also have a nuvi, but i end up using my smartphone through the 2500BT while in a rush cause i can input destination by voice. just get yourself a nice powered cradle for your smartphone.
plus free map updates, traffic, and weather.

Are there any in-dash navs that you guys would recommend? I know that my iphone would work just fine through the stereo, but I really prefer having a GPS system that is in-dash. Plus, for me at least, it would usually add bluetooth connectivity so i can make calls through it. I had it on my old Focus and kinda miss it.
