Alignment

Someone totaled my fit last week so I'm looking for a new one. My fit had a salvage title so unfortunately the insurance company is trying to screw me.

[IMG][/IMG]

The salvage part did not bother me because the type of damage it had could in no way affect the dive-ability of the car. Unfortunately I will need to have to purchase a car with a lot more miles or spend a lot more money (or find another salvage Fit). I've located one but the alignment does not check out as well as it should.

If the rear toe is not within speck how likely is it that it is repairable? (.42 and .00) Will shims fix the problem?

What's weird is the accident happened in the front but the alignment issue is with the rear. I need to move quickly so any thoughts would be appreciated. I so loved that Fit Let it rest in piece.

Unfortunately, you can't shim the rear on the GE, the hub is welded to the beam. The toe concerns me because it seems the beam is shifted to one side. It's not unusual for there to be some toe out from the factory but it usually equal, like +.1 on each side or something like that. If the beam was straight it might read +.21 on each side or something... the way it is right now seems a little strange. Just be sure to have everything checked closely.

I'd walk away from that one myself, but out of curiosity, how many miles are on it?

How about all but new. Under 7000 miles for under 10 Grand (2012 Sport). It drives fine. The big question is how many tires will it eat. Is there any chance that a better auto body shop that specializes in frame straightening could get it closer to factory specs? I can buy a lot of tires for 5 grand.

A good auto body shop should be able to identify the problem, if there is one, by measuring either the old fashioned way or with a laser frame machine. It may not even be the frame, maybe the beam was bent on a curb or something like that.

Wasn't sure if you would just deal with it or try to repair it, just letting you know if you want to repair it it's going to be expensive whether it's the beam or frame. Much less expensive if it's the beam, you could pick a used one up at a junkyard probably.

You could indeed buy a lot of tires for $5k, though I think with +.4 toe out you may need it. I would first identify the problem before making a decision.

My 2013 Sport rear toe readings are 0.31 for driver side and 0.02 for passenger side. That is after 21K miles. I have been rotating tires every 7,000 miles and all 4 look great so far.

That's good to know, I wonder why such a difference in toe though, maybe the beams have some slop to them on the mounting points?

Thanks very helpful. My thoughts exactly on the tires. I'm going to have it looked at further.
