Question Water Pump Replacement as P.M.?

As FitFreakers know from my other thread, I am currently replacing my 2010 Base Fit's alternator and serpentine belt currently (reference: Best "How To" for Checking a Fit Alternator Thread (Click Here). 140,000 U.S. miles on the odometer already!

As such, I decided to go ahead and replace the thermostat and sealing o-ring and coolant.

Since I'm already "into" the belt and alternator, do you think I ought to go ahead and replace the water pump or wait until it fails or some future mileage?

Anyone know what Honda service manual recommends?

Since it has a timing chain and doesn't require removal of a timing belt to change there's no prescribed maintenance interval (like change with timing belt). And since it can't leak on a timing belt (never had this happen but I don't imagine it's good) I'd leave it be so long as there are no signs of play in the pulley or leaks around the shaft. Still, since you're in there, DIY and you're doing the thermostat and coolant. Your call...

The Honda part lists for $86 at majestic, $123 full retail (on my 09). Thermostat assembly is $19 at majestic. NAPA lists a pump @ $92. I'd go with the Honda part.

Thank you as always Steve. I appreciate you chiming in.

A sort of related parts question: have you (or anyone else, of course ) used PartsGeek.com?

The NPW water pump they offer is about $42. I'll probably just leave the water pump be since I have no signs of issues yet.

On key mechanical items, I generally default to the Honda brand (unless the Honda item is stamped with the manufacturer's logo/name/part or if it is overly expensive for what it is). Honda brand on the thermostat. Yep. Prolly go the Majestic $87 Honda water pump route when needed.

And for the observant ones, yes. I opted not to use the Honda brand $611 alternator for the alternator repair. Too much $$$ for a car with 140,000 miles on the odometer. Bought the $122 USA Industries remanufactured alternator (Click Here) at Parts Geek (dot) kom.

How many miles does the water pump last more or less?

Also the cooling fan in the front....

Those are the only 2 things I can think of that would wear out and need replacement.....already did the alternator.....

I've always opted to do the work while I am in there, and if you are doing the belts, thermostat and coolant, imho no brainer to do the pump. cheap insurance and saves you a bunch of time if it fails before your belts and other items you just replaced....which require bleeding the cooling system. OEM 100% of the time for those items as they are proven to love you long time.
