Buy now or wait?

Hello,

I am looking at replacing my 2000 bmw 323ci with a Honda fit. I am looking at a 2009 with around 50k miles. I am wondering if the prices of these used 2nd gens will come down significantly in the coming months as the new model is released... Should i buy now or wait? The car is listed at 10,500 and is in good shape. It is a black 5 speed just like I wanted. Would it be a mistake to not jump at this car, or should I wait it out a few months? My car will be fine for another few months if you guys think that is the best option. Thanks!

Wait.

Without a doubt. Unless you intend of stuffing adults in the back of the car, then get the older one (or get a non-Fit).

I don't think prices are ever going to come down, as such. I went new because used manuals are rare enough that there's no real selection, and one with 50k or 60k still costs so much that it makes new look like a deal.

Look at your situation- is a five year old car with 50k for 10,500 really a better deal than a brand new one with 11 miles on it for under 15,000? It didn't look like a good deal to me. If it looks like a good deal to you, jump on it. Good used manuals don't hang around forever.

A brand new fit is around 19-20k after taxes in my state. Especially since this is a sport w/ nav. I will go test drive the fit and let you guys know what I decide. I am definitely set on a 2nd Gen. Fit, hopefully i will join the club soon!

You mine as well wait for the 3rd gen, it'll probably be a few more months if you can hold out till the summer. Your car would also depreciate less with the 3rd gen considering buying both a new 3rd gen or the last year 2nd gen brand new since it's "newer", but your situation maybe different.

First, welcome to the forum from a fellow North Carolinian!

10500 sounds good for what I've seen in our market for used Fits in the last few months. 50k miles is low for a car that is 4-5 years old. 2007-2008 models are still around 7K with 100K+ miles. Of course, get the car looked at by a mechanic just to look it over and advise on any issues/concerns.

Hope it checks out!

I went Fit shopping this week and dealers have plenty of 3 year old vehicles that are lease trade-ins.
The used car market is hot and good deals are gone in a day or two.
The dealers tell me they have been swamped on weekends, so it might be best to shop Monday to Wednesday after they clean up their fresh trade-ins.
Ideally you should go at the end of the month when they are trying to move iron to hit their sales goals.
In springtime there seems to better interest rates. Everybody was offering rates around 1.9%, which is pretty good for a used car.

You can buy a brand spanking new one for just over 14k. I paid 17,000 for a sport auto last week.

Buy new at 0.9%.

Edit... Probably 14k flat, not over. I see no icentive in buying new.

Somethings going on with Honda right now. Must be dealer rebate season. Another example to share was the near purchase of a new 2014 crv for 24 flat. This was and ex awd in the sexy brown color. Yes, 24k. I wanted it but only for its color but I stuck with my intentions, the fit.

^^^^^ not a sport w/nav they are over 19K

here is my .02
a 2009 sport with nav also has VSA which is a must in a state that gets snow! period, and at 10.5 it's a steal - i'd wonder why???? I just sold my 2010 sport with wav and VSA 6 mo ago for 14.5 and to this day feel like I gave it away, but the buyer was a friend so I guess i'll get over it.
make sure it checks out on carfax and pay $80 to have it looked at by a dealer, they will nit pick it to death and thus give you either more ammo for a little better deal or turn you onto any BIG problems - I see it as $80 well spent

I was talking about a base model mt. Btw a new sport auto with Navi can be had for just over 18k. Mid 17s with manual.

I had similar situation with you 323ci2fit but i was leasing and had 10 mos. left in my contract. So i shopped around and worked out a deal with 4 different honda dealerships in my area. First i set my OTD at around $19K no more than that for a brand new fit sport M/T. Didn't care much for the navi since i had a garmin that works perfectly well. Not to mention it doesn't attract prying eyes. Second, the dealer had to eat up the rest of my lease payments. Third i told them that i know and everybody knows that the 2015 honda fit is coming out in the spring which is coming very soon. Fourth, i twisted the price of other dealerships i went to and told this dealership i'd just go with the other offer. Finally after 3 days they gave me the deal i asked for and called me back. You just have to be patient and you'll get to your goal. I went for brand new because of the M/T. I had to know that i was the first one to use it and maintain it. Plus the car i went for was on the display showroom so i also had a couple of discounts and goodies. Lastly, i personally shopped for the 2013 honda fit as this was made in Japan. If your looking to keep the car for a long time as i do then i would say go for a brand new fit. Hope this helps a lil bit and good luck with your decision.
