Poor Gas Mileage

Hey guys,

Just wanted to get some advice or possibly see what's wrong with my Fit. I have a 2012 Fit Sport Automatic with 24,XXX miles on it. My concern is with my MPG's, the best I have seen is a 100% Highway trip and I barely got 32 MPG. When I drive about a 30/70 mainly city split I get about 23 MPG when I focus on getting good mileage. When I drive normal with occasional hard driving i get about 20 MPG. I bought the car used about 3 months ago and I don't understand the poor mileage. Is there something I am missing, should look at/into, or should I take it to the dealership to check it out? Any help would be appreciated.

I typically drive the car with my wife, two toddlers, and one stroller in the back. I drive on stock tires with aftermarket MOMO Revenge rims, installed the center console, and shark fin. So I don't think the weight would have that much of an effect on the car. I also bought a new air filter about a month and a half ago and run 5/20 oil. Thanks.

Reset the trip odometer (clears avg mpg reading) and take it on a stretch of easy road for 15 minutes. Drive a lazy 55-65. Report back.

23 does suck but it's possible if that 70% is the streets of sfo...

Ok. So I took it for a drive and got the below results:

For the suggested 15 mile at the gruesome 55-60 MPH and 98% Highway I got 34 MPG

I then did 15 miles with the same trip in the opposite direction and did my usual 60-75 MPH and 98% Highway and got 28 MPG.

Later I will do about a 40/60 city trip and update with that info.

Just how heavy are the MOMO rims? Lightest I saw has a shipping weight of 19 lbs on Amazon.

And yes, all that weight does make a difference in city driving. Every time you have to accelerate (stopped light/sign, traffic, etc), you need even more engine power to get going compared to a Fit with just a driver and the lighter stock wheel. More power comes from using more fuel.

Wheel alignment, poorly inflated tires, heavy on the accelerator pedal, lots of stop-and-go (i.e., tailgating and braking a lot). What's your mileage as per the LCD bar graph at a steady 60 mph in D on a highway?

Actually, your mpg appears close to the EPA rated mpg. however, did you notice the low mpg after installing the air filter A restrictive filter can wreck your mpg's. likewise heavy wheels will also drop mpg's although heavy tires will do a worse jobof wrecking mpg's. Since there are aftermarket rims, how about tires. are the vaves properly adjusted?
Those are the things I noticed along with others. And if the tires aren't OEM, have you cconverted the true miles driven before calculating mpg's? And are you running with 40 psig in the tires?
good luck/.

I typically coast into red lights rather than stopping and don't tailgate. As for alignment the car doesn't pull to either side. The tires are still the stock tires and I have them inflated at 38 all the way around. Not sure about the air filter because I replaced it with a K&N found filter about a week after I got it. I plan on purchasing new tires within the next couple weeks actually which will include an alignment.
I did the mainly city driving tonight also. Drove 20 miles at an 80/20 split city with average traffic not stop and go and got almost 23 MPG.

also any recommendations for good tires to replace the stock tires that may reduce some road noise as well as get better gas mileage... Thanks for the help guys.

I feel your pain. Im like poor mileage mascot. I get a solid 20 MPG. I live in the city. Sometimes with coasting and timing through green lights I can just get up to 24 mpg but my tanks always average 20 nearly on the dot (see my sig).

I have bought a new upstream O2 sensor and I'll change it when it's nice out. Paid 175$ for that sucker, I hope it helps. I will also inspect the coils and spark plugs (although I'm only at 55k miles, the plugs should still be good).

Report back if you find the solution!

Have got a bone stock (new Michelin Defender tires) '08 Fit base/auto. With a very light foot on the gas (and no a/c), am getting close to your numbers 25 city/34 hwy. Don't think there is anything wrong with the figures and moreso, your Fit. IMO, you mileage is more average than poor. Go through the exercise as mentioned by other members and it may improve slightly, but at this point I'd rest comfortable.

Lets enjoy our Fits.

Your MPG depends mainly on HOW you drive, not everyone drives the same way, some ppl just wont get good MPG simply due to lead foot/aggressive driving/etc.

- Learn to get to 5th gear asap, and coast there as much as possible
- Minimize brakes usage. Safety first obviously. But in regular driving, braking simply means you should have let off the gas earlier, started coasting earlier, and/or not follow the car in front so close.

I average 40MPG. 50/50 city/hwy driving in Los angeles. 2013 Fit base 5MT

No it can't. It might actually increase MPGs as it would reduce power potential if severely clogged. This is as silly as saying a CAI will increase MPG. Almost.

Carry on.

In addition to personal driving habits, driving conditions, road gradient and quality of pavement plus other external factors will play into MPG. A driver in Denver won't get the same MPG as the same driver in the Las Vegas.
With mine being an auto, I make the shifts occur by or before 2,500 rpm., look ahead and anticipate my stops so much so that by the time I hit a light or moving traffic my Fit is still rolling and has the momentum to continue rather than start from a full stop. The difference my driving is 25/34MPG 70/30 city/hwy, unlike you lucky mainlanders, not many expressways here on the islands. Once a week, the engine gets opened up at full rpm, not only to clear the inards but because its just fun to do!!!
All that said, I do like a car that isn't boring to putt around and my faithful '08 Fit (base/auto) is doing its job in that dept. After all these years, still am enjoying its low-end performance around town. For this reason, my ordered new 2015 Fit will be arriving as a 6-speed manual.

you all forgot one important thing. Winter gas. Run some Redline SI-1 or gumout regane or techron on your next fill up.

What's your oil life at? Is the car still on its original atf?

Replacing either of those things seemed to immediately improve my MPGs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't honda recommend 0w20? Might also help mpg slightly for you.

34mpg at 55-60 is pretty poor. Should be high 30's or low 40's at those speeds. Are you using cruise control?

Also need to know where in SoCal you are. If you're in high desert country or something like that those numbers sound fine. The Fit hates high elevation, dry climates. Like a lot.

Pretty much dry where I am, but lots of humidity. Do what I did, find a Fit owner in your neighborhood and compare.
Was'nt too happy with the results. They have a '11 Fit auto (non-sport) that does 36 mpg hwy. I guess I do have a lead foot!!!

Official EPA rating for 2013 Honda Fit:
Manual 27 city/ 33 hwy
Auto 28 city/ 35 hwy

Getting close to the hwy rating is easy for me but 28 city is a bit of a stretch. The best I've been able to do is 24 mpg of pure city driving. With traffic jams and a/c on it can go as low as 18 mpg. Still, way more frugal than the wife's SUV.

What part of CA? How flat was the terrain? No roof racks, right? Did you reset the odometer after attaining speed on the highway, or stopped before entering the highway? The burst of power accelerating to 55-60 mph at the beginning of a 15 minute course could skew the results.

Agree 34 is low for steady state 55-60 mph. Honda would not say so but I too think it should be in the high 30s assuming flat roads and no wind.

I'd check tire pressures (factory setting) and alignment.
