Valve Adjustment

Has anyone done their own valve adjustment on a 2nd generation Fit? Is there a DIY?

I notice that the engine is set far back against the firewall, and I'm wondering how to get in there.

Thanks.

The shop manual calls for removal of the wipers, cowling around the lower windshield, intake manifold chamber, before touching the valve cover. Besides a new valve cover gasket, you'll need manifold chamber gaskets (four of them).

I'm sure there are shortcuts if you want to deviate from the shop manual, but that's what I'd plan for. And a new set of plugs while you're at it.

This is normally called for by the mm at over 100k miles.

I did this a month back, I have a step by step I made from the Service Manual, pm me your e-mail address, I will e-mail to you. It is fairly easy to do, just takes time because there is a lot to remove before you actually get to the valves and then you need to re-assemble. and as Steve244 says while you have everything off do the plugs as well.

Did you find you had to remove the manifold chamber?

I don't mind making a copy of the relevant pages of the shop manual either (mine's an 09: don't think they changed anything...). It jumps around quite a bit.

Yes took the manifold off, I made the the step by step, after sorting through all the steps so it pretty much leads "do this, then this, then this..." the manual covers the different engine types as well. Going to see if I can post a link to the pdf here.

Yes, I can download/view the pdf.

I noticed you also grabbed the bit on removing the wiper linkage. I'm guessing this wasn't necessary. Did you see any other shortcuts that could possibly deviate from the shop manual while you were in there?

Mine is still two years away from needing this. Never too early to start research!

You need to loosen the Wiper mechanism to remove steel plate under it. the PDF sums it up, you obviously need to make sure you are careful when disconnecting all the electrical plugs, Oh! and make sure they are all plugged back in when you put it together.

hardest part about doing a valve adjustment is getting the correct L shaped feeler gauges

Remember, do the exhaust on the loose end of the range and the intake on the close end.

if for example it calls for 0.010 inches, make sure when you finish adjusting that a 0.011 does NOT go in the gap at all.

Also remember that if your Fit had the motion spring recall service done then valves were adjusted at that time. So just because your MM tells you a valve check is due it might not yet be. Check mileage when recall was done and then add that to MM recommendation.

Good info, guys. Thank you.

Removing all that wiper cowling business looks like a pain, but I expect it will go quickly after the second or third time of doing it.

Brian, at what milage did you check your valves and how far out were they?

It's not too bad, go slow and steady, and you'll be fine

I bought my car at 130 000Km and did the valves at 201 000Km, they were very close to spec.

it is not a bad idea to adjust the valves or at least check them every 25-35k miles, just like automatic tranny fluid intervals

Today, I was on the phone with Helm and American Honda. It astounds me that there is no Service Manual for this thing. I gather that the downloads on Helm — $60 a throw — are all we get, and most of the are not model-specific but function-specific. Idiotic. Honda, who once built cars that would go forever with proper maintenance, now seems to be positioning their cars to last 100k miles. Therefore, you don't need to do service. Therefore, you don't need a Service Manual.

Sorry for the rant.

Thereis indeed a technical manual, go to the dealership and buy it.

What else do the dealer techs use to service vehicles?

Are you finding the valves require adjustment at these intervals? If after the second valve check and nothing had changed I wouldn't be checking again for a long time.

Laughable. In many cases 100K miles is only your first major maintenance service point. Coolant, trans fluid, plugs, valve check, etc. Prior to 100K it is oil changes and air filters, I haven't spent a single cent on repairs. My Fit has 87K miles and even factory brakes will go way past 100K miles.

That is the beauty of today's modern cars. Proper maintenance is very minimal. Much less changing, adjusting, greasing, etc. than was required for Honda's and other cars of a couple decades ago.
