So something put a BIG smile on my face today.

So I go to leave honda today and w/o radio on, I floored the car. I was pleasantly surprised ti hear vtec x-over @ 5500rpm. That is a beautiful thing i always love to hear. There isn't much of the vtec surge. There def is one at 3k when the 12/16 valve change happens. Good stuff. Is there any tone/surge change in 1st gen L15?

You have a GE, the L15A in it is always running on 16valves and VTEC actuates at 5300. The GD L15A has the economy type of VTEC where all valves are in use upon activation.

Learned something new (to me) in this thread. Thanks. Gonna play in the 5300 range on the way home. :-)

I wonder what the small surge is from @3k rpm? There isn't much tone change then on the VTEC-E set-up on GD L15A huh?

Remember other that DOHC i-VTEC on both cams (k20) there isn't much VTEC step surge. i-VTEC has a more progressive powerband.

I too miss the huge vtec surge @5250 in the H22A4.

I've never noticed any kind of surge or crossover on my GD3. The motor gets louder but there is no distinct difference.

But yes I remember the days of the H22A4. It had a lot more pull at the VTEC point.
