Wife drove over a hub cap that rotated inside the front passenger wheel well. Result => ABS light is. I pull the wheels and found the speed sensor cable cut. It's about $300 to replace the whole right front sensor harness at the dealer.

 

why would you replace the harness? grab 2 butt connectors, a crimping tool, some heat shrink, and a lighter.

Spend that $300 somewhere else, or save it towards eventual maintenance down the road

 

13Fit - is there just one wire in there or multiple ones? If one then your suggestion is a piece of cake. If more I looked at Bernardi and a new part is $135. The replacement is rather easy to do.

$135? you need more then just the sensor. The sensor doesnt have all that wiring

If it is only two wires then yes repair it. It will take longer to get the wheel off than to solder a couple of wires.

I was quoting the $135 as that was for the entire piece which includes the sensor.

 

I wouldn't use butt connectors for that just because it will move around a lot day to day when turning the wheels and stuff. Just go buy a cordless soldering iron from harbor freight and solder it back together and throw some shrink tubing on it.

I use butt connectors on plenty of things but that is not one I would use them on, that's just me though.

If you don't know how to solder here is the perfect chance to learn. I taught my 18 year old intern how to do it so if you can manage to take the wheel off the car you should be fully capable just look on youtube.

 

Ive repaired many a ABS harness with butt conenctors. you might be thinking about those caps, the ones most dumb bestbuy radio installers use.


Combined with good heatshrink, the connection will last for years and years. This break in the line also gives you a chance to reroute the wiring if you think it could be in a safer location.

 

I passed on the $135 factory part and on the $102 NAPA price. I bought an aftermarket sensor from a vendor on eXXy for $20 (PN 57475-TF0-003 for the passenger side). You have to be very careful removing the pickup (end) from the wheel knuckle as it tends to rust in place. If you break it off, you got trouble. Also I had to sand the new pickup end until it reduced the diameter enough so it would fit in the hole.

 

He doesnt need a sensor.

 

honestly i would just solder the wires together since it is on the exterior but thats just me. im sure the butt connectors work fine and give the extra length to put the wires together.

 

Thank you all for the advice. I'll check if connecting the wire + battery off will turn the ABS light off. If not, will try other recommended steps here. Again, Thanks !

 

Update: ended up taking it to the dealer. Here's why

- connected the wire and disconnected the battery => ABS light still on
- stripped different place and did the same => light is still on
- OBD II scanner does not bring up any code to reset
- Dealer said $100 charge to hook up their code reader
