Replacing manual shift knob?

I've got a 2009 Fit Sport w/manual transmission. Have owned the car since new and love it, but after a 135,000 miles, there are some wear-and-tear items that are starting to drive me crazy.

The biggest one one right now is the shift knob. The cover has completely deteriorated and it spins when I shift. Would like to replace it but can't figure out how to get the original off!

I'm guessing it just unscrews, but it won't budge and I'm afraid of breaking the whole shifter. If anyone can give me some pointers on how to get this thing off, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

If the knob spins you may have broken the interior sleeve loose from the ball, Some of them you can pop the top off and see inside (Forcably if necessary.) I had to dremel one off once on a old truck.

Thanks for the responses. I need to rip the outer rubber cover completely off, I think, so I can get a better grip.

I'm just going to replace it with the OEM part. Looks like they're widely available. Part number is 54102-SLN-013.

Assuming I can get the original knob off, of course.
