Cool Can an 8 foot foam surfboard go atop a Fit?

Hey folks! Writing from NYC, the land where Fits get stolen daily, haha! I'm on #3, (2011 Sport) and now keep my own personal boot on the car, as well as a club... (I'll get pix up soon!)
Anyhoo, I am about to pull the trigger and get a set of Thule 480R Rapid Traverse crossbars so I can carry my 8-foot Waveform surfboard around easily. But I stopped a Fit owner on the street with crossbars and asked him about this and in the 30 seconds before people behind him started honking, he mentioned some issue about an 8-foot board being too long for the vehicle. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this?
I want to set this summer off right but between installation etc, I'm looking at more than $600 so I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before I go for it.
Thanks!
Mister Jeezy

Not sure about on top but I had a 2010 Fit and carried my 8' 3" kayak inside my Fit. Folding down the backseats and reclined the front seat (removed headrest). You could do this with the surf board. Only thing is you cannot carry a passenger in the car. If something 8 feet long fits inside the car, I see no reason why it could't fit on top.

I would also invest in some front/rear tie downs.

Ah, OK. Tie downs make sense. Good point about the board fitting inside. I have had my board inside, it's true. Guess I'll just take the plunge!
Thanks guys!

I carry my 10ft long windsurfing board on a roof-rack on top of Honda Fit. No tie downs. However, I normally try to avoid highways and going over 50pmh.
