The first one is under the steering wheel on the left side. I took a pic because it doesn't look factory.


The next few are of a removable "door" type thing on top of the air intake box. I tried to see where it leads to and it definitely does not connect with the "dirty" side of the intake tract (before the filter). Can't tell if it connects with the clean side.

It seems like a resonation chamber. I just wonder why the heck there is a removable door for it.

 

I believe the one under the steering wheel is where the factory alarm goes

I have a weird thing screwed in like that too, but mine has a red button and it flashes when the alarm is armed. I haven't pressed the red button yet. Just in case it's the self-destruct button or maybe the ejector seat.

That second thing is obviously the mechanic's cup holder. Well, it was going to be, but Honda changed their minds and put on a lid instead of the insert that would have made it a nice round spot.

I like to store loose marbles in my screw-top box.

 

The first thingy under the steering wheel is a dealer installed alarm. If you buy it, they give a separate control to go on your keys, if you don't ( I didn't) they put a plug in that disables it, but they don't take it out. If you look under the dash you will find a large control box zip tied in place. I have't bothered to try to remove it.

 

ugh dealer installed alarm... that is so annoying. I hope it's "plug-n-play" so I can remove it. Too bad the screw holes will still be there (yea i'm a little OCD). Thanks for the info!

 

I unscrewed it & tucked it up under the dash. I have the screw holes too but have not done anything about them yet. Am thinking if getting a couple of plastic plugs like the type used in RTA furniture to fill the holes. My local Ace hardware carries them, in black...

 

I had one of those on my 94 Del Sol VTEC. In my case, it was an engine imobilizer, not an alarm, but was dealer-installed. They get better insurance rates if they do this. They also try to sell you the already-installed system for some ridiculous price, and simply disable it if you don't buy it. For the one that was in my Del Sol, if enabled, you have to insert a coded chip/fob into the thing under the steering wheel or the car won't run. If it had been an actual alarm with remote arm/disarm, I might have paid them for it.

 

One thing too, the dealer put this "Karr" sticker in the front windows to show the alarm was installed. I pulled them right away. When I met up with the salesman a couple of days later (he was "hooking me up" with the parts dept for a discount on the floormats/nose mask & cargo cover I was buying) he put the stickers back in the windows... needless to say they did not last long....
One of these days I am going to have to poke around under the dash to see if I can figure how to pull it out once & for all...

 

Yeah I had a Karr sticker too. I guess that's the brand of the alarm.

 

putting up a decal of the car alarm just lets everybody know what they need to study if they want to break into your car. dealerships...

 

FWIW the car runs fine without the silencer "door" installed. And it sounds more growly.
No way to tell if it provides any benefit, but at least there's no way it can hurt the engine. I just wish I could email a Honda engineer and ask why they put a door there. I was thinking maybe for diagnostic purposes, or maybe it's simply to have the ability to clean it out more easily if it gets full of leaves.

Anyhow, cheap noisemaker mod for those interested. Like I said, even if it provides a slight gain it likely wouldn't be measurable on a dyno. Same thing if it hurts performance, which it probably does since the intake path is no longer smooth.

 

The stock intake is not a smooth path to the throttle body/intake manifold regardless if that box is on there. All it does is silence the incoming air. If anything your pulling more air in with it removed.

Not enough to make extra power, but hey aftermarket intakes only produce 5whp for like $300 dollars (but you get a cool sounding engine now for that price) waste of money on a stock engine IMO. Drop a $40 K&N filter in there remove the silencer box for a little growl under the hood.

 

Ok, so i learned somethin' new today. Air Cleaner Chamber. I went straight to the garage, took that door off, then went for a spin. Just as stated, "With that top removed the car now has a SMALL but noticeable growl under hard acceleration..." I experienced the same thing. Thanks to quick92ciFit for that additional link - I got a warm-n-fuzzy on my doubts about leaving that door off, and I've got two links to parts sites with exploded diagrams I've been meaning to grab/save for stuff like this.

Why the door....? I can only guess if there's a chamber with air flow, then they best put the access panel/door in case of unforeseen blockage - with what, i do not know. Anyone else have a better guess?

This is a very common mod in the motorcycle world...removing panels or dremeled-out out portals for more air flow, so I think I'm gonna keep that door off. Hmmm, somethin to add to the cheap-mod wishlist...a replacement chamber door cut-out and fitted with thin, foam filter+mesh to keep it rigid - kinda like the inlet filter on the HKS turbo kit.

 

Just pluggin-in the diagrams here as a convenience thing...
