ATF and Oil
ATF and Oil
I have a 2013 Honda Fit base model that’s about to hit 70k miles. I took it to the dealership for a coolant and trans fluid flush. $250 later, I’m also due for an oil change. I did my cars first oil change on my own but haven’t done it since. It was such and pain trying to crawl underneath it. I got ramps a few months back and I figured screw it I’ll do the oil change myself and save about $40. Well my car savvy fiancé decided he wanted to change it. I said go ahead since he knows about cars. Well, he drained my damn trans fluid without thinking about it, changed my oil filter, and added three quarts of oil into my car. Going out to do some running around later today after he “changed” the oil, my car started sputtering, RPMs went ballistic and my car started blowing white smoke. Pulled over, figured out what happened. He drained about three quarts of ATF ($96 wasted). Him and my dad met me on the side of the road with more ATF fluid (they bought 3 quarts). We only put about 2 1/2 quarts of ATF back in the car. Now we are in the process of trying to drain the 3 quarts of oil overage in my car. What a lovely night, never again. So this leads me to two questions. 1) Should I put the other half quart of ATF in my car or leave it at the 2 1/2 quarts that I’ve already put in it? And since my fiancé is asking 2) The oil screw is on the back of the pan, closest to the axel correct? The screw on the front passenger side of the pan is obviously the ATF. Now I’m worried about my transmission. Finally just got the oil level down to where it needs to be.
That’s what I thought. Just in case, I decided to take it to a mechanic this morning to check the AT. The last thing I want is to think everything is alright and end up with a busted transmission. Thanks for your reply! I’ll pass on the message of the oil pan location so that is settled.
YouTube is a wonderful thing to understand things before you / he do anything like this again. It might be worthwhile to change the ATF again (Honda DW-1 fluid is approx $8 / qt). Are you using a new aluminum washer on the transmission drain plug and using a torque wrench so as to not to over-tighten the drain plug?
Car savvy? I think not. If he can't tell the difference between an oil and trans plug then you don't need to let him near your car again.
