Arrow Honda A02 oil filter has slight oil leak from the rubber seal ( gasket ) after oil ..

change . Has anyone encountered this ? It's a 2011 and this is the 3rd O.C. using the A02 , the 2 before seemed fine . Did lightly oil the gasket / seal . Looks to be from the bottom of the seal . Could I have over tightened it ? Should I tighten a bit more ? Or should it be replaced with a BOSCH or other oil filter with a wider and thicker seal / gasket and then top off the oil . Previous oil was for 8,500+ miles . Using Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 . I used a socket wrench with a metal filter oil cap and turned it 3/4 or a bit more after tightening by hand. Last of all, could I just let it be. Thanks .

Is it possible that the gasket from the prior oil filter stuck to the car and didn't come off with the filter? Hand-tightening should be enough unless you're very weak.
(that's why they teach you to use used oil FROM THE OLD FILTER to oil the new gasket- you're more likely to realize that the gasket is still stuck to the car)

No gasket was stuck to it. Always clean the base where the oil filter meets the block. Used a wrench as stated on the oil filter instructions.

And you're sure it's a leak and not just residual oil dripping from when you removed the filter?

I just put a filter on today (aftermarket, not Honda part) and the instructions said hand tighten- one turn past where the filter meets the block. I just tightened it as much as I could by hand, that seems to work.

I cleaned and rechecked the base of the filter several times. I will have to keep an eye on it.

Do you mean A02 as in an Honda A02 filter? Did you make sure that the oil filter housing's surface and oil filter gasket was free of any items that could get between the surface and gasket and possibly cause a leak? In addition to that, was the oil filter was tightened to 8.7 lb-ft or once the gasket material seats (by hand) against the filter housing, go an addition 3/4s of a turn to tighten the filter?

If yes to all of these, Honda actually put out a bulletin recently regarding some defective oil filters which apply to both the A01 and A02 filters. If I remember right, 1 out of 7,000 filters are defective; either the gasket on the filter isn't seated properly and/or torn or the threaded bit inside the oil filter itself was not threaded correctly (which doesn't allow the filter to seat properly and allow for leaking), or a combination of the two.

I'd give a call to your dealer's parts department that you picked up the A02 filter, ask them about the oil filter bulletin and see if you can get the to give you a new oil filter (A01 if possible).

If you get a chance to look at the gaskets on the A01 and A02 filters, you'll notice its a night and day difference in material used in the two. I personally prefer the A01 since the gasket on it is softer than that of the A02 and expands much better when tightening in my opinion.

I am sure there was nothing between the seal where it meets the engine block. Will look into the bulletin and possibly call the parts dept. Thanks for the input.

There was a recall for Honda oil filters before, maybe it's one of them? If not, then maybe the gasket is lose at some point.

Too tight. Can you tell us where you read to use a wrench?

old oil filter stuck would have been a huge mess, it dumps the oil in seconds. Also it should be hand tight snug.

Hand tighten only, 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

Read it from off the oil filter before installation . The socket wrench and oil filter cap were used for the 2 previous oil changes with the A02 and no issues with oil seepage .

I've found that during the winter, periods of dis-use and cold weather can conspire to induce some "seepage" around the oil filter seals. I've used A02 (Honeywell) filters for a couple years now....but this observation is not limited to just the HW filter.

Unless the oil is dripping onto the ground, I say don't lose any sleep over it.

Took it shopping yesterday and found slight spot on paper napkin appiled at base of filter in a parking lot . Cleaned it off and put 30+ miles on it to get home . Checked it today and no oil to be found on a white napkin . Cleaned it and will recheck after other drives it to work for 50+ miles . Hopefully it's over .

Did call Honda parts and was told of the issue with the gasket and the thread of their oil filter . Asked them to send the T.S.B. by e-mail and hasn't arrived yet .

Got pics of the filter on the car , but can't post them ( don't know how ) . One shows the instructions of how to install filter . Does state use a tool and turn 3/4 after hand tightened .

Not after hand tight, after the gasket contacts the mating surface. I Hondas saying after hand tight they need to ammend there instructions.

Checked it when she got home from work which is 52 miles to and from . There was no oil to be found on the white knapkin . Maybe it was some oil leftover from lubricating it before installation . Will keep tabs on it .

Tell that to the oil filter manufacturer or Honda or both . Just going by what's printed on it .
