under the dash, in my 13 Sport Fit MT, above the power plug, there is a flat panel that has a sort of a nostril (flat) looking opening, taking it out, it has a couple of wires..
What on earth is this thing? I found, taking out my OEM radio to install a new Pioneer with steering wheel interface.
(I have questions about that, and that will be a different post!)

You're referring to the little panel above the coin holder/cupholders just above the center console and below the AC button etc., right? There's a little light there to illuminate the cupholder area at night, which is what the little holes and wires are for.
