Homemade Turbo - Done

Huge congrats to my good friend overseas. Feel free to chime in on your build if you see this. I'm beyond happy to see what you have done and am behind you 100%. Good stuff! Hoping to see you get it all tuned and ready.

Otherwise, this will just be a mystery to you folks. If he decides he wants me to delete this post.....done deal. I won't give out too much more info. Just letting folks know what's possible and what is being done out there. It's running 5psi without issue. And was done by someone in their garage.

Hard to tell from the pics, but a couple questions:

Looks like he's running an intercooler too?
What kind of turbo did he use?
Custom turbo manifold?
What kind of engine management?
Dyno numbers?

Kind of surprising, would love to hear how much headroom there is on the injectors at that boost level. Probably wouldn't want to go higher than that considering how slender the rods are. I'm probably not the only one on this forum who's really, really hoping your friend gets on here and tells us everything there is to know.

My tuner told me out injectors allow for 30% more fuel to be injected.
Guys, look at boostec as well

i looked into boostec just now. they're not very upfront about the kit, aside from a set of pictures on a sample install. would love to read more.

hey that's my car

Looks like he's running an intercooler too?
yes.... an ebay turbo

What kind of turbo did he use?
2016 civic turbo.... just ported it a little bit, with a custom downpipe and custom intake pipes on turbo side

Custom turbo manifold?
I don't know what do you call a turbo manifold... Is it the exhaust manifold from engine???? Because if it is then it is only a matter of drilling the bolt pattern from the fit into the exhaust side of the turbo to make it bolt on

What kind of engine management?
Ktuner, but still needs to keep figuring out a better tune

Dyno numbers?
I don't know but on quarter mile I'm head to head to a stock 2016 civic turbo sedan..

It is really fund to drive

Glad to see that you have stopped by. Still in awe of your build.

Good to know you are running as fast as a stock civic turbo. I personally don't care for dyno numbers. Here's to hoping you get it tuned and everything to work out.

Did you by any chance take pictures as you were putting this together? I don't know if I'm capable of pulling this off myself, but pictures of the build might save a bunch of stupid questions like where did you put the MAF, did you have to get a custom fitting or reuse a stock part to mount it, where are the oil lines routed to and from the turbo, that kind of thing.

Either way, this is fantastic and inspiring.

Yes I stopped by looking for options on upgrading pistons and connecting rods and saw this post from our old good friend Kevin... Right now I'm planning on running a set of K1 forged rods for the L15a (because this seems to me the weakest link on the current engine) and pistons from the L15b7 to lower compression ratio and ad strength... What do you guys think???

I did not have pictures of the hole process, just the ones Kevin uploaded, but when I take the engine out to upgrade pistons and rods maybe I take a couple more... The problem is that must of the work is done on the back side of the car and there is no much room for a camera to capture a good angle to understand things, but with the engine out all would be more clear

Are you planning on running even more boost pressure, or just trying to make sure the engine stays together long term? Curious why the combination of aftermarket rods and factory pistons either way.

As long as I'm asking questions, curious how/where you mounted the MAF, and how you ran the oil lines to the turbo?

planning to lower compression to get more boost with the pistons, as for now I can only find custom build aftermarket pistons (wiseco, carrillo, etc) and they are way to expensive.
it looks that the aftermarket pistons for the L15a wont work,
so my only hope is that the L15b7 pistons on the ext or the si will work as they are already dedigned with lower compression, coated to resist higher temps, same bore, and dome of the piston designed for direct injection.

the L15a rods are basically the same since the L15 exists so going for a forged aftermarket set is going to be better than a stock ext or si ones.

and yes all of this is for getting more boost, more power and that the engine cam handle it

the maf is right before the turbo and after the air filter, I used a cheap civic r18 pipe for the base of the sensor and chopped it to fit my needs

How are things coming along with your setup? Did you get the lower compression pistons yet?

I've been following this thread and another real closely but I received a response today from KTuner that it does not support forced induction. How did you get it to work?

What exactly about Ktuner does not support forced induction?
