Honda Cargo Cover

I measured the thickness of the Honda cargo cover. It's 0.059" or 1.50mm. The Lloyd's Mats cargo mat measures 0.156" or 3.98mm. I plan to get the WeatherTech when it becomes available, and I'll compare them.

We've had cargo covers on two previous hatchbacks and there was always the issue of what to do with them when they were in the way. With 20% tint on the rear windows, we just need something to cover light colored boxes, etc. Got a 50" x 60" black fleece blanket for $8.99. It's doing the job for us and we just leave it folded up in the rear area.

Ah, thank you. My next question was going to be "Why is the thickness important?", but this makes more sense.

That means that the tint is 80%, and the amount of light that is let in is 20%, correct? Wow. Massachusetts doesn't allow anywhere near that level.

Correct. It's a popular level of window tint. Our windshield has no tint and the front side windows have 70% film, which combined with the 75-80% factory tint, should just meet the Ohio requirement for 50% minimum on the front windows (0.70 x 0.75)--knocks down the solar rays (especially being ceramic) but the police can still see you.

[edit: Ohio doesn't limit visible light transmission on rear windows, but does require outside rearview mirrors if you have it dark.]

Since this thread has included the cargo liner and tray…

Here's an alternative for the 2015 Fit cargo area:

Canvasback cargo liner available in different patterns/colors

Previous hatchbacks included the cover with the car, saving the owner $200.

True.. one was an Acura GS-R, but the other was a 1989 Ford Escort.

I had Civics from 1980 and 1997 and a 1987 Escort - all with the cover. Later, I had a '99 Escort ZX2 (no hatch).

Wonder why the cover for the 2015 is nearly $70 more than for the previous year's models. It looks very similar to the one for the GE.

The new covers are a complete redesign from the 2008 version. The new ones are a solid cover, the 2008 would retract, then pull out for use. I do like the fact the cover closes when the hatch does, but the 2008, when not in use, took up less space in the back of the car when removed from it's supports.

When someone thinking of breaking into your new Fit in search of valuables sees a cargo cover, this is what his mind registers:

Instead of using a cargo cover -- which actually teases a thief into thinking their might be something valuable under it --- just get a large ordinary shipping carton and cut the bottom out of it. On the top of the carton place a label something like this:

Add to it some Magic Marker printing like:

ATTN: EBOLA BLOOD / FECES SAMPLES for C.D.C. LABORATORY

...or just use your imagination and come up with something that the average thief would not be interested in. I'd like to try a big shipping carton with an address labeled to Kimberly Clark Corporation, ATTN: Used Depends Research Dept,......... etc.
-----------

Now just place your valuables in the back of the car, place your dummy carton over them, and leave your car anywhere you wish to --- without worrying someone is going to break in.

The one on the 2015 is the same style as the GE 2009-2013 model-- stiff cardboard with a felt-type layer on top-- same as the type as my 1992 Toyota Corolla Wagon-- the GD version is more like the old rolling flexible shade kind found in Subaru Wagons. I loved the cargo cover on my old Toyota it was really sturdy and much larger then the one on my Fit-- could carry lots of stuff.

I read somewhere (installation instructions perhaps), that they don't recommend placing anything on top of the cargo cover. I think this is because in a fast braking scenario, those items can come flying forward and become the equivalent of an incoming missile.

I like the idea the cover may help keep lightweight items in the back cargo area, but even then, our combo battery booster/air compressor is still so heavy, we use a cable to secure it to the floor area.

I wonder why it wasn't included as standard equipment, as it should have been. It's one thing to leave it out, but it's quite another to charge so much for it. It's fuzz-covered cardboard.

I got the cargo cover for practical reasons-carrying a few lightweight items, hats, sun shade-- never even crossed my mind to use if as a theft deterrent. I'm a gardener and it is great for carrying plants....I did not attach the strings to the clips, because I do not want it to turn up when I open the hatch
