I tried measuring the thickness of the Honda cargo mat and WeatherTech front mats. The Honda cargo mat is about 1.45 mm thick. The floor mats were more difficult to measure because of the little lip on the edge of the material. It messed up the placement of the calipers on the mat. I have a micrometer somewhere. If I can find it, I can get a more accurate measurement.

As it is now, though, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in thickness between the Honda cargo mat and the WeatherTech front mats.

I did just that with our Fit just after we got it. Being able to transport bikes is my main concern with both cars we own, so I went about getting our new Fit to be able to carry 2 road bikes or 1 29er MTB inside, and had the 2" hitch fabricated and installed so that I could carry 2 bikes (or 4, I suppose) with our hitch-mount carrier.

This is a close-up of the fork-mounts that I mounted to a piece of 3/4" plywood, shaped to fit snugly into the trunk

Angled view to see 1 road bike with other rear seat in the upright position. **Note: I remove the saddles from my bikes to get them inside. I have seen others get theirs inside without doing this, but I couldn't make that happen.

Side view with 2 bikes inside. Notice the overlap of the rear wheel with the front seats in their normal position. I tried several different types of orientation for the front fork, always getting the handlebars as close to the window on the tailgate without touching. This was the farthest back that I could get them.

Full rear view, also showing the 2" hitch with the plug in it.
